5 P: Founded in 2012 in Perth Western Australia, Bombora is an award-winning ocean energy company.

5 P: Bombora’s innovative mWave produces environmentally friendly, consistent and cost competitive energy for commercial scale energy needs in coastal locations throughout the world. mWave harnesses the vast potential of wave energy in the form of pressure on the sea floor. This greatly reduces the risks associated with surviving extreme storms and enables a simpler and more cost effective design.

5 P: MWave is located beneath the ocean surface making it invisible while extracting maximum energy. mWave is non-disruptive to ocean users and marine life and can survive stormy conditions. mWave’s flexible rubber membranes pump air through an onboard turbine to generate electricity that is then delivered to shore via a subsea cable. The design simplicity of mWave delivers low maintenance requirements.

5 P: In 2017 Bombora launched a 17 000 000 GBP project to construct and test a 1,5 MW mWave off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales. In 2018, Bombora successfully secured a 10 300 000 GBP European Regional Development Fund grant to support this project via the Welsh Government.

5 P: Lanzarote Wave Park:

5 P: Lanzarote has a large and consistent ocean energy resource along its northern coastline. Bombora’s mWave™ wave energy converter has been selected to deliver clean renewable energy into the island’s power supply, whilst preserving the island’s rugged and pristine coastal environment.

5 P: Cabildo de Lanzarote, the island’s governing body, through a collaboration agreement with Enzen have partnered with Bombora to deliver this commercial grid connected wave energy project.

5 P: The first phase of the project will see 2.0 MW of generating capacity installed. The power generated by the submerged wave energy device will supplement the island’s existing electricity supply which is currently largely produced in a diesel-fuelled power station.

5 P: The project is currently progressing through the planning and consenting process, managed by Enzen and the Cabildo. A site survey and measurement campaign are being undertaken at the proposed wave park site. Detailed engineering will progress through 2020, followed by fabrication.

5 P: The project deployment site is located to the west of La Santa, located on the north side of Lanzarote, the fourth largest of the Spanish Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean.

5 P: Bombora has established a project company in Lanzarote, Lanzarote Wave Power S.L. and opened an office at the port in Arrecife. The project will be the first grid connected mWave and the first two-armed collector system consisting of 20 membrane cells. The mWave will be located approximately 500 m from the shore and located on pin-piles installed into the seabed.

5 P: The Lanzarote Wave Park is the first of a number of commercial projects Bombora is developing as part of its global project portfolio.

5 P: The project is being carried out by a consortium of specialist partners each of which will provide value to the project. The project team is seeking an Engineer Procure and Construct (EPC) partner to join the consortium and provide services to the project.

5 P: The EPC partner will be responsible for the activities identified above. Overall responsibility for the performance of the system including the membranes and the turbine will remain with Bombora as the technology provider.
