Summary

The current innovation business project was submitted and approved on November 2014 as a SME Instrument (SMEI) Phase 1 with a total score of 13.58 (Impact: 4.58 / Excellence: 4.46 /Implementation: 4.54). After the execution of Phase 1, during three months, all the objectives have been achieved as scheduled.
Medtep would like to adapt its current cloud platform uClinics and uPatient to a niche market such as the rare disease. These are two SaaS platforms (Software as a Service) that aggregates medical and life habits data from other integrated solutions (apps, medical and lifestyle-related devices, etc.) which complement the data entered manually. Furthermore, a new customized dashboard will position Medtep in the DIY (Do It Yourself) platform market, facilitating the access to a widespread market like the rare diseases with more than 7.000 different described diseases so far.

Work performed

Over the last three months Medtep has designed a strong business plan, based in a SaaS maintenance service that will allow patients and doctors improve the monitoring of rare diseases. The uMonitorRare solution will allow the healthcare industry to move to a more personalized care, improving productivity and effectiveness of the healthcare professionals, and making patients more aware and responsible for their health. This tool facilitates the doctor monitoring their patients as well as allows their evaluation and prescription. From the patient side, it centralizes their medical information, facilitating their understanding and helping them to acquire a more proactive role toward their health.
The economic feasibility of uMonitorRare has also been widely analysed and the results show that the business model is viable.

Final results

The outputs of each one of the tasks demonstrate that there is a real need for a solution like uMonitorRare as evidenced in the fact that we have managed different letters of interest from various patients associations (users), hospitals and pharmaceutical companies (customers). During the execution of this action we have been able to compare our solutions with others, detecting that no other solution so far is tailored to the needs of rare diseases. In the same way, together with FEDER (Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases), we have focused our market in order to provide a customized solution to 10 rare disease patients and integrate the platform with the most relevant HIS. In that sense, 3 HIS has been selected for the implementation process.
Last but not least, a work plan for future steps has been developed, which involves the presentation of a Phase II proposal. As a first stage requirements from doctors, patients and developers will be collected. Then the dashboard will be customized to the 10 selected rare diseases and a Do it yourself tool will be developed in order to allow each user to customize the dashboard to their needs. In parallel, several medical devices and HIS will be integrated into the cloud-platform in order to feed the dashboard with information. When all the systems have been developed and integrated, a two-stage pilot test will be carried out in 5 different European countries
