Summary

Pressure transients that occur within aerospace fluid systems can drive system design pressures up. As the aircraft manufacturers rely upon conservative margins & late development tests to verify the level of surge, when the structural and system design is frozen, any opportunity to reduce weight has been lost.
The project aims to verify 1D CFD model predictions using actual test data across a range of surge mechanisms, with different installation and equipment configurations, over a range of operating conditions. The project will develop improved modelling methodologies and verify the accuracy and the limitations of 1D CFD models to predict surge.
The objective of the project is to improve the integrity associated with 1D CFD models to reliably predict surge pressures within aerospace fuel systems. This will allow the developed modelling methodologies to be applied confidently to reduce the conservatism in design pressures and allow aircraft manufacturer to thereby reduce system, installation & structural weight; thereby improving the overall aircraft efficiency.

Work performed

The feasibility study has assessed the scope of work, technical justification, the commercial benefits and the routes to market for commercial exploitation of the programme (including assessment of regulatory requirements which may drive exploitation). It has also defined at a top level the project plan and the work packages required to complete the full program of work successfully and provides the associated costs and financial analysis. A full risk assessment has also been performed.
