Summary

At Jakusz, our aim is to achieve a leading position in the international demilitarization market by offering complete and customized solutions. Through investments in innovation and implementation of new technologies, the company contributes to increasing public safety and creates conditions for optimal hazardous material handling, ensuring the highest standards of environmental protection.
For 30 years we have been providing institutions such as ministries of defense, fire brigades, police, border guards and others with protection against explosion effects, constructions for hazardous materials storage, ammunition disposal, information security and critical infrastructure protection.
We have recently created the Space Technologies Department, with the aim of exploitation and commercialization of the unique technology for production of 98% concentrated HTP, that has a huge potential to become clean and broadly applied propellant for satellite engines. We have constructed and tested a laboratory prototype plant for a safe and low-cost production of 98% concentrated HTP, that will be developed and exploited twofold: (1) On site technology line located at our premises; (2) container based mobile plant.
We intend to upscale the laboratory prototype into a fully automated technology line, that will be further fitted into the containers and will be suitable for transport and installation wherever required. The objective of the current Phase 1 project was to demonstrate the economic and technological feasibility of the EcoSpacePropulsion prototype and to prepare the ground for the last steps of the development agenda.

Based on the feasibility assessment and the updated business plan it was concluded that our technology has a potential to succeed on the market, hence the final development steps are worth to pursue within a Phase 2 project.
Key aspects supporting the conclusion:
 There is a clear trend in Space research for clean and cost effective space propellants;
 The technological assessment proved the cost-benefit advantages the technology
 Our solution responds to market opportunities both in R&D and industry sectors searching for and testing new space fuels and develop new satellite engines;
 With need-based product offering and pricing strategy both target markets can be serviced while achieving acceptable margins.
 The financial plan indicates potentials for revenue generation and profits during the examined first 5 years of exploitation.

Work performed

The objectives of the feasibility study were achieved through implementation of 9 designated tasks as per the work description:
Task 1 - Strategic partner search - Objective reached: We identified a number of academic and industrial institutions directly involved in research on 98% concentrated HTP and/or its industrial application,
Task 2 - Extended Market Research - Objective reached: we analyzed the market trends, identified the market players and their needs and drew conclusions for business plan;
Task 3 - Market access barriers - Objective reached: we studied regulatory framework and identified non-regulatory barriers for market entry;
Task 4 - Technical Feasibility Study - Objective reached: we have overcome the technical and process limitations of the prototype observed during the proof of concept phase;
Task 5 - Develop relations with customers - Objective reached: we established first commercial contacts and we signed first letters of intent;
Task 6. Regulatory Framework and IP protection - Objective reached: we analyzed the regulations governing trading of chemicals and defined future IP strategy;
Task 7 Risk Assessment - Objective reached: we analyzed technological and business risks and prepared contingency plans.
Task 8 Business Plan - Objective reached: we prepared a business plan and defined our market expansion strategy;
Task 9 Detailed work plan for phase 2 application - Objective reached: we prepared a detailed work plan and will implement it in phase 2 project.

The analyses used available information on legal frameworks, current and forecasted data on market and financial environments, identification of key market players, technology watch and identification of currents trends in space fules applications. Desk research were further complemented by data collected through stakeholder interviews.

Final results

The final result of the EcoSpacePropulsion project will be commercialization of the unique technology for production of 98% concentrated HTP. This will be developed and exploited twofold: (2) Construction and installation of the technology line located at our premises and distribution of 98% HTP to the customers; (2) Construction and application of a container based mobile plant that will be able to produce HTP at the client’s premises. This solution will be tailored for the customers with regular large demand for the HTP and to whom the delivery of the ready product will be problematic due to formal and legal constraints concerning transportation limitations.
This dual approach derives from the limitations in HTP transport which under international laws and conventions is disalowed by other means than through road and water paths.
HTP might be used for space rocket engines both as a single-component propellant, or as an oxidant. It is the only substance offering both applications. It is furthermore neutral for the environment, as the only products of its chemical decomposition are Water and Oxygen. High Test Peroxide (HTP) has been identified as one of the most promising low cost and green propellants and a serious candidate to replace hydrazine and currently is probably the most studied monopropellant worldwide.
