Summary

The problem addressed: GT-Position addresses the problem of precise indoor positioning in a large areas in order to track and control moving vehicles, robots, trolleys, drones etc.,

The importance for society: If the recorded indoor position is not precise enough and cannot scale, then we cannot use the position for control of autonomous units or we might not get the necessary safety, or it might be too expensive. Further on the recorded positions data represents a high value for say retailers or users in order to minimize waste and optimize the business. And further on there is a high need for getting this information without a demand for recording person related data.

The overall objective of this project is to target some areas where the precision is highly needed, where the demand for large area scaling is obvious, and where demands for data provided without person relations is high.

The feasibility study has concluded that the project shall continue and that the Phase 2 application should be pursued but delayed, probably 3-6 months. The delay is founded in the details where particular the selection of the sub-segments in the Cleaning robot area, as well as the go-to-market solution for the Drone tracking and 3D has unveiled some very interesting associated application areas which needs in depth evaluation before we march forward.

The financial analysis has put focus on having at least 2 strong partners, one per segment in the beginning, and be more opportunity driven in the third segment. At the same time the current GT-Position technology as is on the market to-day shall be continued in the model and hobby area where our capability yet seems to be growing.

Work performed

Our GT-Position technology both in its current form and in its next generation form has been evaluated against 3 competitors and it seems likely that GT Position has many applications with a sweet-spot corresponding to our capabilities. That counts for our current as well as for our next generation GT-Position. Through our investigations we have identified a technology component which can improve our frequency of measurements.
This report and feasibility study follows the guidelines in the document “SME Instrument Phase 1 – Final Report Template” and comprises the following sections:
A. The End-user Requirements study and verification for Intelligent Trolley (INTROY segment);
B. The End-user Requirements study and verification for Cleaning Robots in Dirt handling (CRD);
C. The End-user Requirements study and verification for indoor drone flights (IFDI);
D. Identify any new, important at upcoming and relevant new business area for further investigation later;
E. Market verification;
F. Business case;
G. General: IPR strategy verification and direction;
H. General: New Competition Development;
I. General: Manufacturing capabilities.
J. Visit reports in appendices.
The method used has been to go through the 3 proposed market segments (Intelligent trolley, Cleaning robots in dirt/farming, Indoor flying drones in manufacturing/inspection) and engage with our current and potential partners in order to validate our feasibility in each area. The description of the study and the details are found below. The study has been very practical and outgoing in order to get our vision and capabilities verified.

The most intriguing part of the feasibility study deals with the dilemma of going horizontal based on our platform, or go vertical through the selected market segments.
The study has identified that if we can find a balance between going vertical through the selected segments and going horizontal through the 3D tracking capabilities we can double the business plan gross margin in the 5 years period. Finding this balance and the organizational structure and the IP-plan is going to be one of the main topics for the Part 2 project. During the feasibility study som surprising new sub-segments have been seen.

Final results

There is no other extra result beyond the already mentioned and no other socio -economic implications beyond the already described ones.
However, the vision of a generic, low cost high precision indoor position system has similarities in its growth potential to the well known Google maps. And this is may be an all too big target for us to reach ?
3 years after the project is ended we will have created 35 new job, partly in GamesOnTrack, partly in rest of EU.
5 years after the project has ended we have created 53 new jobs, partly in Gamesontrack, partly in EU.
