Summary

There is a rapid rise of IoT electronic portable devices in recent years, including wearables (from go-pros and smart watches to the burgeoning field of Augmented Reality (AR) eyewear) and portable, micro size medical devices (i.e. hearing aid or heart pacemaker). These emerging industries require novel, high capacity, long life time, rechargeable batteries that are increasingly small, lightweight to fit existing and future smart electronics –e.g. fitting within the wrist band of a smartwatch, or within the rims of smart glasses. Following the outcome of 3 years of development research and extensive testing, 3DB present a novel generation of button rechargeable Li-ion battery for high power high energy applications of significantly improved performance and costs points versus the current state of the art technologies/products. The proposed project targets an up-scale process and the development of production facilities to validate their novel production methods. The advancements over the project include a cost-effective production process, stable production to support marketing and certify process, and demonstrating enhancement of the specific energy density by a factor of at least 3 times (in comparison to the commercial button battery) while maintaining the high cycling stability, dimensions, and cost.

Work performed

During the feasibility assessment, 3DB has completed a full analysis of the technical and business potential of their novel method for battery development. Throughout the project, 3DB has greatly expanded their knowledge regarding the production validation and regulatory approval required for the European market launch.
The key technical milestone achieved during the project will be delivery of the fully functional prototype of the lithium-ion tiny battery in a coin with higher power and energy densities than any other battery currently available on the market. 3DB also spoke to key stakeholders such as future contract manufacturing organisations and future customers.

Final results

3DB’s novel assembly method for Lithium-Ion Battery electrodes and separation area enables high performances. These high capacity and cycle life performances are due to: 1) Volume efficiency 2) Minimisation of destructive processes 3) Homogeneous 4) Internal resistance 5) Sustainability.
