Summary

Action context:
In recent years the threat of terroristic attacks dramatically increased. Global demand of bomb-sniffing dogs increased while supply of these dogs is severely lacking behind due to the fact that current training programs are reaching limits in terms of efficacy, accuracy and efficiency. It is mainly human factors in dog training that hamper high throughput of well-trained dogs. TSE Systems has a TRL6 prototype of an automated dog trainer device (IDT) which lowers use of resources and allows for constant monitoring of learning progress, standardization of training protocols, optimization of training according to newest insights in dog behaviour, certification and re-certification of dogs “on duty” and early selection of dog talent by breeders. IDT is an automated high throughput device that multiplies delivery of well-trained detection dogs.

Objectives:
In phase 1 TSE Systems wanted to
1. determine the technical feasibility (from TRL 6 to TRL 8) of IDT and define specific requirements for training scent detection dogs on the purpose of scent-detecting explosive materials.
2. determine the commercial feasibility of IDT: develop a business plan specified towards various fields of interest, including market size and -dissemination, margins, growth rate and trends, stakeholders, communication planning.
Outcomes of both feasibility studies will form the basis for a step-2 proposal.

Work performed

Main results:
The technological concept of IDT-SW and HW was refined making use of expert interviews and feedback of potential users. Developing SOPs, (safety-) certifications and scientific studies on implementation/validation have been found critical factors for advancing the system from TRL6 to TRL8. Thorough analyses performed by a commercial subcontractor for market intelligence revealed law enforcement agencies and private institutions to be distinct target groups. Competitor analyses, estimation of market size, -dissemination, -growth rates, as well as a scenario for market penetration forms basis for a detailed business plan. Scientific publications and events were found optimal media for product communication to support the direct sales-commercialization strategy.

Final results

Potential impact:
TSE-Systems aims to improve and revolutionize the status quo of training explosive detection dogs worldwide. The existing conjunction of global security threats and shortcomings of regular training practices highlight the increasing need for well-trained explosive detection dogs.
