Summary

\"Classical music has not embraced digital formats for written the music the way that the rest of the world has for the written word. This is due to the unique way in which sheet music is represented and the fact that the available tools are not adequate. Beatik overcomes one of the major difficulties, musician\'s hands being occupied playing their instruments making turning pages awkward, by using an innovative algorithm that allows the app to \"\"listen\"\" to what is being played and scroll the score automatically, adapting in real-time to the tempo of the piece being played. This is coupled with a complete digital eco-system and community, allowing musicians, their colleagues and their orchestras, ensembles or conservatoires, to share and distribute musical scores and annotations completely digitally. This also includes an extensive library of classical music scores for subscribers, possible due to the majority of popular classical repertoire (>90%) being out of copyright, the composers having died long ago.
One of the major advantages, for institutions, like orchestras, ensembles and conservatoires, that manage many musicians and distribute many scores, is that with Beatik this is done completely digitally. This eliminates the need to print, store and ship huge quantities of paper, around the world and allows musicians to manage all the pieces in their repertoire digitally.
This project is focussed on developing Beatik as a fully featured application that can be reliably used by institutions, such as orchestras and conservatoires, as well as by individual musicians, professional and amateur. The ambition is to become the standard for digital representation of written music for professional performance use.

Work performed

\"We have evaluated the technical viability of all the elements required to realise our ambition; the \"\"listening\"\" algorithm, mobile OS development, score rendering, and database and community management. This led to the development of a proposed work plan for the Phase 2 project and risk analysis. A freedom to operate analysis revealed no intellectual property issues to prevent our exploitation of Beatik, and we considered our intellectual protection strategy. A market study, survey and preliminary user testing has fed into the creation of our business plan and commercial strategy.\"

Final results

\"Beatik transforms the way in which written music is handled, currently requiring huge quantities of paper, and the resources required to produce, print and transport that paper. Furthermore, as a digital medium, Beatik can make available musical scores that, today, are largely unaccessable because they are not \"\"in print\"\" and few copies exist, thus unlocking a significant cultural heritage that goes unappreciated.\"
