Summary

The objective of this project is to provide innovation support services to SMEs in the regions covered by the consortium members. These innovation support services will be differentiated for two groups of SMEs:

- SMEs that have been selected as beneficiaries of the SME instrument, phase 1 or phase 2. For these companies, the consortium members will offer Key Account Management (KAM) services, which are accompanying services for the SMEs to identify weaknesses in their innovation capacities. Once these weaknesses have been identified, the companies will receive support services for selecting one or several suitable external coaches who will provide additional support services. The coaches will be selected from a list provided by the European Commission and using the tools provided. We will provide support services during all the process.

- SMEs that have high potential for growth and internationalisation but that need to enhance their innovation management capacities (EIMC). These companies will receive direct assessment services from the consortium members in order to detect barriers and develop and implement an action plan in order to enhance such capacities and overcome the detected barriers.

The initial target was to provide support to 110 companies. The results of the project have been very successful: 117 companies have received support services.

These support activities have produced better prepared SMEs, more competitive, with a higher interest in their internationalisation and reinforce the Internal Market, which are the final objectives of the European Commission.

Work performed

The initial target was to provide support to 110 companies, 33 through KAM services and 77 through EIMC services. The results of the project have been very successful: 117 companies have received support services:

- 57 companies have received support services under the KAM scheme; 47 companies in phase 1 and 10 companies in phase 2. 26 companies are still receiving support services at the end of this contract and the support services will be provided under the next contract.

- 60 companies have received support services under the EIMC scheme. 7 companies are still receiving support services at the end of this contract and the support services will be provided under the next contract.

The results are very satisfactory since the number of companies that received support services is higher than initially expected.

The cooperation with regional and national stakeholders has been very important both for the KAM and the EIMC services. For the KAM service, we have collaborated with regional actors of the R&D&i sector in order to promote the SME Instrument, provide support services and raise awareness among the regional companies. We have also collaborated with CDTI, the Spanish National Contact Point for SMEs programmes and National NCP Coordinators, as speakers for their events related to the SMEI, as support services providers for companies willing to participate in the SMEI, etc.

For the EIMC service, the cooperation with other regional stakeholders in the implementation of these activities has opened additional cooperation areas related to public procurement, development of circular economy, etc. It has directly produced synergies between this activity development and activities related to the EEN, increasing the cooperation among other stakeholders and improving the services to our clients, increasing our visibility, and creating an important effect in the companies.

Final results

The excellent results of the Spanish companies in the SME Instrument have had a direct impact in all the beneficiaries, since they get an important funding for their project development. However, the future impact is even greater, since they will be able to accelerate the commercialisation of new products, which also will mean new jobs, increased profitability of the companies, internationalisation of the companies, etc.

Regarding the companies who received EIMC services, the direct impact on the SMEs is clear since they increased their knowledge on development of innovation strategies, generation of ideas, development of such ideas to turn them into new products and services and management of the market introduction. Thanks to that knowledge, companies were able to start using new tools for ideas generation and project management as well as to introduce new internal procedures to identify and develop new ideas that would finally become new products in the market.
