Summary

BET-EU the twinning action will be exercised between the Portuguese cluster research organisations (UNINOVA and I3N) and the international leading organisations UCAM, FhG-IKTS and VTT, implemented through BET-EU, will have a positive impact in their scientific excellence and innovation capacity. Furthermore, the activities to be implemented are expected to contribute to an increase in the economic impact of the area of Advanced Functional Materials, Nanotechnologies, Biotechnology and Nanosciences, aligned with the Smart Specialization Strategies at regional and national level.
Therefore, predicted impact of BET-EU is:
(i) consolidation of the current Strategic Research Agenda
(ii) development of the capacity building activities for UNINOVA and I3N’s researchers
(iii) strengthen synergies with internationally-recognized Centres of Excellence in the Advanced Functional Materials and Paper Electronics technology and applications
(iv) enhancement of the visibility of Portuguese research institutions, by increasing the engagement of industrial communities and other stakeholders into the Portuguese paper electronics cluster.

Work performed

In this first period of the BET-EU twinning action the following activities were carried out:
Sustainability of Portuguese scientific and innovation strategy
The consortium has started preparing a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) to ensure that all the partners’ competences and expertise are mirrored into PT cluster. The consortium has been quite active also in promoting several internal and open discussions on identifying opportunities for new research lines and potential collaborations. Within this spirit, BET-EU has established strong collaboration with the EIT KIC in Raw Materials, including organization of some common events. In additions to this, the consortium will work in the next period in developing partnership with Portuguese and European Academy Science on research and innovation topics.
Boosting research and innovation
Within the objectives of BET-EU, the consortium has prepared a set of actions related with staff and students exchange A total of 12 persons from I3N and UNINOVA (8+4, respectively) have been enrolled on secondments at UCAM, FhG-IKTS and VTT. Moreover, Portuguese cluster as hosted two of the six planned visits occurred, receiving experts from UCAM and VTT. Two virtual training courses (webinars) were also implemented in this reporting period
Network for knowledge exchange
The consortium has already organized one workshop and one summer school, the last in close cooperation with the EIT Raw Materials, targeting student for different countries in Europe. Moreover, the consortium members have also been engaged in the organization of symposia and workshops at international conferences
Spreading scientific excellence
The BET-EU project is present in the web and social networks. Of great relevance is the promotion of communication and collaboration with other initiatives and stakeholders, such as INOLAE, OES, EMRS, EIT, EURASC and Papertronics (US).

Final results

Via BET-EU the institutions involved could align their strategy, aiming to promote science engagement beyond the ones established by BET_EU as well as in promoting new projects aiming to better exploit the existing competences in Portugal. To this action, we can highlight the ones under exploration which are:
a) Science network: this has been done via reference European programmes such as Marie Curie as well European network via exploitation of common PHD formation of students involving Portuguese and non-Portuguese institutions;
b) Projects up TRL 3: exploiting ideas in programmes such FET or ERC from which we have already obtained some success;
c) Projects from TRL 3 to 5: good association with key partners via the ones established by BET-EU. The idea is to explore the areas of expertise at I3N and Uninova/CEMOP and to share them with others as a way to promote new partnerships;
d) Projects above TRL5: exploiting directly towards industry based proof of concepts: This is underway where with success story to which also contribute the fact of people involved in BET-EU (coordinator) and the director of I3N being nominated in 2016 by the European patent Office as the one of the 3 innovative ideas in Europe with the so called paper transistor (http://www.epo.org/learning-events/european-inventor/finalists/2016/fortunato.html);
e) Improve the visibility of the institutions involved, translated in an enhancement of high impact factor publication or involvement in the definition of policies connected to the key area of the paper electronics, as it happened with the invitation from the USA National foundation to be involved in the discussion of the programme that they intend to launch in this area in 2017 (http://nsf-papertronics.rutgers.edu/);
f) More invited and plenary talks given by team members at international conferences thanks to enhance of our visibility as well thanks to the partners of BET-EU that do promote in their network the excellence done at I3N and Uninova/CEMOP;
g) Acquiring new competences to further exploit either as publishable scientific work, or to promote and disseminate knowledge inside and outside the Portuguese institutions involved.
h) Establishing new competences that facilitate partnerships within the industrial companies, aiming to better exploit the ad value connected to paper electronics. This is an area of success where good bridges have been already established with the key paper company (Navigator), and end-users of the technology such as Imprensa Nacional casa da Moeda. Other contacts are underway.
i) Improve the connections to the region. Here the Almada Municipality has been involved in supporting the expansion of the CENIMAT/I3N and CEMOP/Uninova infrastructure to support the establishment in the region of a multidisciplinary hup connected to the area of paper electronics and to the advanced functional material field whose inauguration will take place at 1st June 2017.
