Summary

The main topic of this project was the organization of the Open Science Conference in Amsterdam, 4-5 April 2016, during the Dutch Presidency of the European Union (January-June 2016). The Dutch Open Science Conference included a high level meeting on the morning of the first conference day focused mainly on strategic questions with regard to Open Science, and a meeting on data ownership elsewhere in Amsterdam parallel to the Open Science Conference.

Open Science as such is important for scientific and academic research as well as for society and industry, in Europe and worldwide. The Open Science Conference brought together representatives of all kinds of stakeholders in Open Science in Europe.

The overall objective was to arrive at concrete actions for stakeholders from various backgrounds that would be taken up together. Other objectives were to prepare input for the Open Science Council Conclusions of the European Ministers of Research in the next month, and to prepare for a European action agenda to be developed further by the European Open Science Policy Platform.

Work performed

The Dutch Presidency Open Science Policy Platform took place in the Europa building in Amsterdam. The parallel meeting on data ownership was organized in Casa400, also in Amsterdam.

The end result of the project was the deliverance of the actual Open Science Conference together with the high level meeting and the meeting on data ownership. The outcome was presented by state secretary Sander Dekker at the end of the second conference day, 5 April. Immediately after the Open Science Conference the outcome was published in a booklet entitled \'Amsterdam Call for Actions on Open Science\'.

The five work packages described in the grant application were carried out in a rather natural way together. There were the logistics including registration, transport, dinner, and IT-facilities; the announcement of the EC Open Science Policy Platform to be installed in May; the action agenda as may be read in the \'Amsterdam Call for Actions on Open Science\'; public relations; and the coordination of all activities.

Final results

The Open Science Conference had impact with regard to the policy developments of the European Commission, through the Open Science Council Conclusions in May 2016, and with regard to the start of the European Open Science Policy Platform also in May. The idea of multiple stakeholders in Europe working together - like researchers themselves, research funders, research organizations, libraries and data archives, publishers, and publishing platforms - had been envisaged for a first time and had been taken further.
