Summary

The CyanoAlert service will be a global service for the environmental authorities and commercial sector, concerned by health risks and quality of water resources. The service will deliver a fully automated application for assessing toxin producing cyanobacteria blooms in water resources globally, using Copernicus satellite earth observation remote sensing technology. The service foresees a dual dissemination system that provides user-specific information for monitoring and reporting purposes to paying customers, and a free and open information for the public through web and mobile applications. The consortium consists of three implementation partners, Brockmann Consult (Germany), Odermatt & Brockmann (Switzerland) and Brockmann Geomatics (Sweden), for the technical implementation of the Service, and three pilot user partners the County Administrative Board of Stockholm (Sweden),The Italian National Institute of Health (Italy) and the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development (Romania). The pilot user partners will integrate the service into their daily operations to demonstrate its usability and value. The establishment of a sustainable supply chain, and a sound business model, will enable us to bring this innovative service to the market.

Work performed

Several project and user consultation meetings were arranged during the first project period. User engagement, product customisation and integration (WP2), as well as, formulation of requirements related to the development of the commercial production process and service platform (WP3 and WP4) was in focus for these meetings.
A template was prepared as basis for the Customer Consultation Meetings and the outcome of the meetings, work and discussions was compiled in Deliverables 2.1 (Customer consultation), 2.2 (Service requirements) and 2.3 (Design specification).
A detailed communication strategy was prepared as a basis for promotion and dissemination purposes during the project, based on the material in the GA. GIS maps and Landsat-8 imagery of cyanobacteria blooms in lakes for the user countries was created and provided for promotion purposes. In addition, promotional content was completed (presentation, poster, banner, online brochure), social media accounts were opened and a project web page was launched. The project was actively promoted at the International Ocean Colour Sciences meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, 16-19 May 2017.
The hardware needs for the first year of the project were clarified and the hardware acquisition strategy was modified and realised. The single elements of the processing chain were defined and investigated in terms of their implementation status. Several processors required for the service development have been updated and/or implemented on the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP). Processing chains for MERIS and OLCI data, combining all processing steps, have been defined and implemented on Calvalus, a processing system for Earth Observation data. As one example, cloud screening for OLCI was investigated in more depth and the IdePix tool for pixel identification (among other cloud detection algorithms) was improved and included in the processing chains. Finally, initial tests of the implemented processing chains have been performed. Maximum chlorophyll index and ancillary products for Lake Pertusillo (Italy) were compiled for ad hoc analyses by ISS.

Final results

The project will lead to an innovative service delivering information on the health risks from cya-nobacteria blooms to commercial and public entities derived from satellite remote sensing. This will lead to greater social awareness of the risks related to cyanobacteria blooms to human and animal health, the impacts of anthropogenic activities on fragile freshwater resources, pollution, water quality and the health of freshwater ecosystems. The service will go beyond existing services or products on the market to deliver downstream information at the user client useful for their immediate monitoring and management activities, and integrated into their daily activities. In terms of economic impact, the project is expected to result in significant value and revenue turnover for the commercial participants, should the project be effectively implemented.
