Summary

\"AEGIS aims to provide support to EU-US dialogues and to stimulate cooperation in cybersecurity and privacy research and innovation, and thus to contribute in shaping the future global cybersecurity landscape. The general objectives have been materialised by implementing the following specific objectives:

1. Launch a reflection group on cybersecurity and privacy, the Cybersecurity Reflection Group EU-US that will act as a multi-stakeholder collaboration platform to facilitate interaction, debate and exchange of views between European and US relevant stakeholders. Under the umbrella of the Cyber-RG EU-US, two Working Groups will be established: the Cybersecurity and Privacy R&I WG and the Cybersecurity and Privacy Policies WG.
2. Organise project events aligned with policy dialogue meetings and cybersecurity-related events. The objective is to create synergies, increase visibility and maximize impact.
3. Identify and map the relevant legislation and policies in place stimulating the innovation and deployment of cybersecurity solutions. AEGIS will assess the EU and US policy and legislation frameworks on Cybersecurity & Privacy to explore secure protocols and homologation of regulations.
4. Leverage existing activities and identify mutually beneficial opportunities for future EU-US cooperation in Cybersecurity and Privacy. We will identify and follow up on priority topics for EU-US cooperation.
5. AEGIS \"\"Doorknock\"\" outreach to relevant US funding programmes supporting cybersecurity and privacy R&I collaboration. AEGIS will conduct in-depth, systematic and strategic outreach and briefings through project events to decision-makers at funding programmes.
6. Promote collaboration and innovation partnerships between researchers, innovators, and industry from Europe and the US with the goal of coordinating the multiple research efforts underway in the areas of cybersecurity and privacy.
7. Increase visibility of the project outcomes and raise awareness of opportunities for cybersecurity and privacy R&I cooperation between Europe and the US. This will be achieved by leveraging AEGIS partners’ network multipliers and contributing to build a global community of cybersecurity stakeholders and experts, which will stimulate EU-US cooperation.

Work performed

AEGIS has generated added-value differentiated outputs that bring to EU-US international cooperation on cyber security and privacy a multi-stakeholder dialogue facilitating the exchange of best practices and definition of future priorities on R&I initiatives. Major achievements of AEGIS can be summarized as follows:

• The Cybersecurity Reflection Group (Cyber-RG EU-US). It has been designed as a voluntary multi-stakeholder collaboration platform to promote policy debate and provide opinions and recommendations furthering meaningful dialogues to address international, technical and socio-political challenges in cybersecurity and privacy R&I. Under the umbrella of the Cyber-RG EU-US, two complementary Working Groups have been established: WG1. Cybersecurity and Privacy Research & Innovation WG and WG2. Cybersecurity and Privacy Policy WG.
• Mapping of the landscape of cybersecurity in EU-US. The project developed two landscape documents that describe different aspects of the cybersecurity and privacy sectors in Europe and the US.
• Benchmarking on EU and US Cybersecurity Landscapes. The Benchmarking report provides an analysis of EU and US cybersecurity and privacy R&I priorities, as well as recommendations for future EU-US collaboration in R&I for cybersecurity and privacy. The analysis is based on desktop analysis, using the JRC taxonomy and relevant documents that highlight the most important areas and topics for R&I and funding programmes in EU and US.
• Prioritization of topics and actions for EU-US collaboration. AEGIS has selected three sectors that belong to critical infrastructures for cybersecurity and that are preeminent for mutually beneficial transatlantic cooperation: finance, healthcare and maritime. For each of these sectors AEGIS focused on those cybersecurity topics and actions that require a cross-organisational and international approach to addressing cybersecurity and privacy.
• Guidelines for Innovation Partnership in Cybersecurity and Privacy. AEGIS has conducted an analysis to identify good practices and guidelines for innovation partnership between organisations from EU and the US in such a way that mutual collaboration is beneficial for both jurisdictions.
• AEGIS White Paper and Policy Brief Series. White Papers and Policy Briefs, represent some of the most important documents produced by the project. The series explores cybersecurity and privacy R&I priorities, as well as relevant legislation and public policy that can shape the landscape for future R&I collaboration in the EU and the US.

Final results

AEGIS is having a significant impact on creating a common ground for EU-US collaboration in cybersecurity, which goes beyond the project lifecycle. The impact-driven dissemination strategy put in place since the beginning of the project has contributed to raise awareness, promote understanding and generate engagement with the target groups throughout the project lifecycle and thus to achieve a wide impact of AEGIS.
• AEGIS has identified critical R&I priorities of high common interest for EU-US cooperation in cybersecurity and privacy. Three research action areas for EU-US collaboration require a cross-organisational and international approach to addressing cybersecurity and privacy: finance, healthcare and maritime sectors.
• Strengthening to the maximum extent possible the innovation dimension of international cooperation is at the core of the AEGIS project. To this purpose AEGIS advantages include Guidelines for Innovation Partnership in Cybersecurity and Privacy for EU-US collaboration which are based on selected case studies engaging private sector industry, researchers, innovators and stakeholders from Europe and the US.
• Increased the international visibility of EU and US activities in cybersecurity. The AEGIS strategy has been to maximise project impact through multiple channels and capitalising on the partners’ network multipliers to a refined and enriched segmentation of target groups to promote cybersecurity and privacy transatlantically.
• Identified potential European and international common approaches in addressing cybersecurity challenges from an R&I as well as governance and institutional perspectives. AEGIS has embraced a multi-stakeholder approach to great advantage thereby supporting and indeed accelerating EU-US dialogues and expanding cooperation around cybersecurity, and privacy research and innovation.
• Established privileged relationships with relevant organizations and key stakeholders across Europe and the US, which represent invaluable assets to support EU-US dialogues and cooperation in cybersecurity. The project’s multiple events, round tables, workshops, meetings, conferences, and professional connections have been of the utmost importance to first build and then solidify these connections and to further amplify the impact of AEGIS. Moreover, we have recruited and deeply motivated policy makers, researchers and industry leaders attending the project’s events to serve as project “ambassadors”, and even “champions” as well as spokespeople to spread awareness about AEGIS in their respective political, research and business communities.
