\"A survey of 1000+ IT professionals has shown that the biggest challenge faced by the cloud computing industry today is the \"\"lack of [human] resources / expertise\"\". The objective of FogGuru is to train eight talented early-stage researchers with an
innovative and intersectoral research program to constitute the next generation of European Cloud and Fog computing experts. Besides their scientific and technical education, FogGuru ESRs will receive extensive training in technological innovation and entrepreneurship as well as soft skills. These combined skills will enable them to fully master the innovation process stemming from fundamental research towards invention and development of innovative products and services, and to real-life deployment, experimentation and engagement with beta-testers.
Highlights from this proposal include:
- A strong consortium composed of two internationally-acclaimed universities, two successful high-tech SMEs, and two strongly-committed partner organizations.
- An ambitious training program mixing in-depth technical education in the ESRs\' scientific domains, a broad technical and soft-skills training to make ESRs knowledgeable in relevant domains close to their expertise area, and a state-of-the-art
training in Innovation and Entrepreneurship provided by EIT Digital Rennes.
- A unique living-lab experience in Valencia (Spain) where ESRs will deploy their technologies in a real urban fog-computing platform, and engage with external beta-testers to evaluate their technologies and refine their technological innovation plans.
- Every ESR will dedicate 40% of their time in academia, 40% in one of the high-tech SMEs, and 20% in the living lab, thereby personally driving the full process from fundamental research to technological innovation and engagement with potential end users.\"

Work performed

\"At the end of FogGuru\'s first reporting period (01/09/2017 – 31/08/2019), the project is progressing at a satisfactory pace towards its research, training, dissemination, communication and innovation objectives:
8 Early Stage Researchers have been recruited, 4 training modules have been organized, 3 secondments have began, 2 research papers have been published in international journals and conferences and 3 are under review. 3 invited speeches and presentations have been made and the FogGuru Twitter\'s account is very active.
The 8 Early Stage Researchers are now fully engaged in their personal research and training activities as well as in the collective efforts related to the Living Lab.
The Living Lab experience is scheduled to start in November 2019 and will give to the ESRs the opportunity to get \"\"out of the lab\"\" and confront their respective research results with the constraints and difficulties of a real-world deployment of their research contributions.\"

Final results

The four ESRs who are mostly involved in the Application Resource Management work package have made significant progress toward their respective research objectives. ESR4 has conducted and extensive study of the new types of autoscalers made possible by the container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes. A paper on this topic is currently under evaluation in an international conference. ESR1 develops innovative technologies to implement a seamless migration of containers in a fog, in particular in the case of stateful containers. We anticipate a paper submission in an international conference in the next few months. ESR3 designs an approach for anomaly detection and root-cause localization in geo-distributed fog platforms. Her research is making good progress and we anticipate a paper submission in an international conference in the next few months. ESR8 has submitted a first article in an international journal on a systematic way to assess the security (or lack thereof) of fog computing platforms. She now investigates novel techniques to allow fog applications to demonstrate their compliance to privacy-related requirements, and we expect a paper submission on this topic in the next few months.

The four ESRs who are mostly involved in the Stream Processing in Fog Computing Environments work package have made significant progress toward their respective research objectives. ESR5 studies techniques to enable full elasticity in stream-processing engines such as Apache Flink. He has published a first paper in the demo track of the prestigious EBDT conference, and has received the best demo award for this work. We expect him to submit his next paper on SPE elasticity in the next few months. ESR6 develops new ways for stateful stream processing operators to reduce their inter-replica traffic by reducing the level of precision they offer. He is currently working toward his first paper to be submitted to an international conference. ESR2 has designed a validated performance model of stream processing operators in a fog computing environment. A paper on this topic is currently under evaluation in an international conference. ESR7 designs end-to-end data processing pipelines that will act as one of the fog application blueprints of the FogGuru project. The work is making good progress and we expect a paper submission in an international conference on this topic in the next few months.


The major innovation boost in FogGuru is expected to come from the start of the Living Lab activities in Valencia in November 2019 which will put a first batch of ESRs in a real-life context, where they will be closer to end users of fog computing platforms, applications and services. The FogGuru Living Lab is expected to produce a lot of interesting contents, insights and results, which shall enhance the impact of communication, dissemination and innovation activities.
It will enable the ESRs to validate their technology and the end-user acceptance. It will also represent a technological showcase for both the companies involved in the projects as well as a great opportunity for Las Naves to keep exploiting these new technologies after the end of the project via the use-cases deployed by the FogGuru ESRs.
