Summary

The main objective of the ADD-ON project is to investigate the feasibility of developing a unique Optical Sensor Network to control various classes of distributed and punctual optical sensors. This Optical Sensor Network should exploit these sensors in a variety of profiles of use (in-flight monitoring, on-ground operation), monitoring the structural health monitoring (SHM) measurands of interest: delamination, corrosion, cracking, loading while simultaneously sustaining data transfer… This Optical Sensor Network will be designed starting at its conception phase in order to facilitate its future integration into aircrafts, considering the specific environmental constraints of aerospace implying in particular to miniaturize the interrogation units through an all-on-chip approach. The results from ADD-ON will lead and/or contribute to the following benefits:

• Reduction of manufacturing cost due to higher integration:
• Weight reduction due to multidisciplinary optimization including new certification
• approach:
• Enhancement of new multifunctional materials:
• Manufacturing and assembly skill and capabilities; Structural dynamic and structural analysis tools

Doing so, ADD-ON will positively impact the following JU Specific Relationships:
• Reduce aviation environmental footprint,
• Help to improve mobility and decrease congestion by supporting vehicle developments that improve time efficiency and agility,
• Address future market needs with product differentiators making travel greener, more efficient and more pleasant,
• Set an active collaboration with the aircraft OEM and the large aero-structure supply chain around integrated platforms, focused on key essentials, shared achievements,
• Contribute to European growth and to the preservation of highly skilled jobs.

Work performed

The 36 months (36M) research and innovation action ADD-ON is divided into two phases: an exploration phase (18M) and a consolidation phase (18 M). We are currently at the end of the exploration phase during which the partners investigate the best sensing solutions, mainly at the material and device levels for the sensitive nodes of the optical sensor network. Recent achievements concerns the following technologies:

• Development of sol-gel based sensors, with the identification of the procedure to be followed to functionalize complex surfaces. See an exemple of inscribed sol-gel optical waveguides on a BK7 substrate.
• Development of sensors based on fiber Bragg Gratings: definition of the sensing chain in the airframe context
• Development of self-testing connections: recent advances concerning the capability of the Optical Sensor Network to probe itself its integrity and reliability through the detection of bad connections or bending issues.

During the consolidation phase, a prototype of the Optical Sensor Network will be performed and tested on a representative aircraft panel provided by the Topic Manager of the project (Airbus).

Final results

Recent crucial progresses have been achieved regarding the development of sol-gel sensors. One of the developed approaches will be able to produce these sensors in a more efficient and green way with a reduced use of solvents and materials.
An Integrated Photonics based solution for self-diagnostics and -testing capability for (fiber) optic waveguide propagation and connections is developed and planned to be demonstrated (TRL4) in the project.
