Summary

Wastewater Science Ltd is a Maltese fast growing SME that has a clear business objective to produce wastewater recovery products and to reclaim the nutrients in the wastewater for productive use. Our company intends to commercialise a novel affordable, portable and autonomous wastewater treatments units and make the business more profitable and sustainable through a novel business model. We are challenging the status quo of organic waste disposal by offering producers a novel and greener alternative that is more convenient, eliminates disposal and hauling costs and in countries where water is a scarce and expensive resource it recovers water from organic waste, thus reducing significantly their water bills. 70% of the world’s water is used in the agricultural sector. Our novel product creates added value from waste and by-products generated on farm and saves the farmer 85% of costs. Our company has diversified from Big Players and has created an untapped niche market in the $1 Billion wastewater treatment industry. Our solution provides a high economical and environmental impact to the global agriculture sector.
Wastewater Science carried out a Feasibility Study through H2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 funding. In the study we have analysed and iterated the product through constructive customer development, analysed the local and global market and industry trends, assessed competitive landscape, determined how we can protect our Intellectual Property Rights, assessed business and technological risks, identified organisational gaps, drew a financial plan and a work plan. The outcome is that our solution and business model is possible, feasible, viable, profitable, sustainable and key for our business growth and competitive edge. Wastewater Science will continue pursuing this project.

Final results

Our technology is the first wastewater recovery product accessible to small and medium dairy farms that makes it commercially viable to own, operate and maintain. The business model that makes this operation possible and feasible is also innovative. The by-product of one agricultural sector is now transformed into a valuable product to another sector, positively impacting the agricultural industry both from economic and environmental perspectives. The expected result a wastewater recovery unit and a novel business model.
