Summary

Aeronautic sector is increasingly facing various safety threats to passengers, crews and aircraft caused by foreign object debris (FOD) as well as birds and drones on runways and surrounding airport areas. Given the high impact of potential incidents – damage to aircraft and potential loss of lives – there is a continuous adoption of best practices and technologies to mitigate the risks. Today, most airports rely on periodic vehicle patrols for runway inspections, but such procedures have several limitations, resulting in cost of +$13Bn/year for airports and airlines.

MS3E aims to seize a major market opportunity, offering an innovative solution – FODBASA -that has been specifically developed to overcome limitations of existing technologies. FODBASA is an autonomous radar-camera-based system designed for simultaneous detection of FOD, birds and drones. Our system allows to provide cost-effective, accurate real-time FOD birds and drones detection on runways and within a 10-km radius of the airport.

FODBASA project goal is to implement the necessary activities to overcome the remaining barriers related to market entry, namely by providing convincing documentation of performance, cost-effectiveness and regulatory compliance by demonstrating FODBASA prototype in 2 in-situ large-scale demonstrations.

FODBASA is expected to generate €74M in revenue and €33M in gross profit, in 5-years post-project.

Work performed

During the feasibility study, we have interviewed several airports and other key stakeholders. We performed the following tasks: (1) Identification of regulatory challenges; (2) Business plan elaboration and market analysis; (3) Identification of new possible partnerships (formal commitment) (4) IPR strategy definition: we opted for trade secret to maintain absolute secrecy of the solution; (5) optimisation and testing of core technology; (6) Plan the innovation project, incl. formal engagement of partners for the demonstration activities.

Final results

The outcome of this innovation project will include the following advantages: (1) reduced operational costs for airports and airlines (2) Improved safety of flight; (3) improved passenger’s experience; (4) improved environmental performance for airport and airlines; (5) improved reputation for airports and airlines. FODBASA’s impact and benefits reach not only the customers (airports) but also other players across the value chain, such airlines and passengers and the overall society.
