Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Green Radar (An advance Multi-Side Boating Platform working with Passive Radar technology boosting a new emerging market)

Summary

The level of the maritime traffic has had a tendency of constant growth during the last 150 years; maintaining this trend, the number of commercial exchanges by sea, and therefore of vessels, will grow exponentially. As a consequence, the number of accidents has also increased more than twice within the EU area, in 5 years. The security on the coast is a huge issue for both, the navigators and the marinas.
In the market the available radars are expensive, and they need installations, which make the navigators to have second thoughts about making the purchase.
The society in general will have important gains: more safety at the sea and the coast, which means higher quality of maritime life, increasing of maritime economy, and promotion of technology advances.
The objective is to validate the final product configuration with the prototype 3 of our TRL6 system and to develop the commercial application of our radar system.

Work performed

From the beginning of the project, we have worked on the development of two prototypes, which have been created together with the University of Pisa. From this work we have one publication, IEEE Radar Conference, Washington, DC, 2010, pp. 225-229.
Afterward, our team has fully developed and consolidated the passive radar design, leading to the realization of the second functional prototype, (OCEANS 2015 - Genova, Genoa, 2015, pp. 1-6.). This is the prototype that has been tested: two successful experimental tests were done in Livorno and they proved to have reliable and precise results on the detection and tracking of ships within 30 km from the coast.

Final results

The development of the radar system is not completely new, but we are improving the recompilation of data by improving the design and the electronic components. The completely novelty in our project, is the way to reach to the customer, the way to deliver the information display by our system: the mobile application.
The impacts are mostly the safety at the coasts, the improvement of the economy and the way we integrate new technologies in the everyday life. With the insertion of our system, we are introducing a device or product that is not hazardous to any kind of life, which at the same time deliver information that its analogous active radar can deliver.
