Summary

Laboratories are under pressure to improve accuracy, process higher workloads and expanding test menus, as well as become more efficient by reducing costs and using fewer staff. To achieve this, they must significantly improve productivity. The only currently available solution of consultancy implemented soft ‘paper and spreadsheet’ lean lab systems is expensive, complicated, inflexible and not sustainable over time, while also not having the ability to take into account more complex issues such as workload volatility (dips and peaks, variety of volume and mix) – a key area for achieving productivity savings. LeanLab cloud-based solution by Plan Domino addresses these issues (cheaper, better, sustainably) by offering the first digital platform on the market. This important innovation was inspired by the frustration expressed by many in the industry at the absence of a digital solution and incorporates the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), touch screen technology and visual management tools will be transformative in terms of impact it will have on the market and the target customer. Successful implementation of the LeanLab platform will reduce the overall cost and improve the quality of pharmaceutical products. This will improve access for the general public to life saving drugs. The overall objective of the LeanLab project was to determine the feasibility of the proposed software platform.

Work performed

The following activities were carried out for the LeanLab Project:
Risk assessment
Pilot site productivity improvement assessment
Return on investment (ROI) study (Based on the assessments and ROI study, the market is deemed valid)
The market strategy has been refined based on feedback from participants
The pricing strategy for the business has been adjusted to suit the market needs
Freedom to Operate analysis and IPP/IPR review was carried out and has concluded that PlanDomino is free to operate
A partial pilot was implemented and feedback is informing the development team on next steps

Final results

The feasibility study has concluded after 8 months of engagement with pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. The result of the study has concluded that the proposal is feasible but requires further investment
