Summary

Overview: Morphotonix protects consumers’ health and safety against counterfeit goods by providing a cost-efficient and secure anti-counterfeiting solution to the brand owners. We provide additive‐free brand protection of moulded plastic articles via product embedded holograms and security codes. The company specializes in the design and nano-engraving of security features on surfaces of metallic moulds used in mass‐production of plastic items. When replicated into plastic from the master moulds, the nano‐structures create holograms and nano-security codes embedded in rigid plastic. Morphotonix’ brand protection activities started early 2014, and it is now working with over 20 global brands.

Morphotonix’ advantages to brand owners are:

1. Passport-grade product-embedded security

2. Zero-added production cost

3. Boosted consumer confidence in products and brands (instant customer authentication and zero CO2 footprint).

Product and Technology: Nano‐patterning of flat metal moulds is currently complex and expensive, preventing the use of such technologies for mass‐production goods. Morphotonix nano-engraves custom images/logos on free-form metallic moulds used for plastic replication. The plastic replicates the nano‐structures, resulting in visible nano-holograms or invisible nano‐engravings. This is a major breakthrough as, for the very first time, these effects can be integrated in large‐volume industrial processes on any plastic moulded articles without prohibitive capital costs.

Market Analysis: The band protection market for global electrical & electronics and packaging for agrochemicals and beverages are estimated respectively at USD 1.7 bn and USD 4.9 bn (see Market potential chapter). Among the global brand protection solutions on the market, the hologram industry is estimated to reach US 19.7 bn by 2015. Morphotonix technology bridges the classical holographic label market and enters new untapped markets where the security feature is built into the product without additives, as part of the manufacturing process.

Business and Market Strategy: Our primary customers are brand owners who produce plastic articles (final products and packaging) and are at risk of being counterfeited. We are looking to identify and analyse new markets and develop internationally.

Work performed

Project Goals and Achieved Milestones: in this SME-1 project we proposed to validate:

1. The commercial/market feasibility of Morphotonix for industrial equipment & consumer electrics market segment by listing key prospects in each segment, a prioritized list of product requirements, and creating the value proposition and business model canvases.

During the project, we identified the most relevant segments in each industry and developed the market analysis for each.

2. The economic/financial feasibility of Morphotonix by running a preliminary assessment of opportunities in automotive, medical and FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) markets, and by developing a go-to-market strategy for expansion outside of the EU.

During the project, we ran the preliminary assessment of the relevant new market opportunities and developed a go-to-market strategy for the U.S.A. and Asia-Pacific.

Final results

As a result of this market validation project, more products will be secured with the Morphotonix technology in the near future, in various vertical industries. This will safeguard more consumers whose well-being and health would be at risk because of counterfeiting
The growth of Morphotonix as a company will also enable hiring business and technical talent from Switzerland and EU.
