Summary

The most important equipment of linemen and other professionals required to climb poles and trees are their climbing irons that are widely used because of terrain, cost effectiveness and speed. However, climbing irons are not classified as personal protective equipment (PPE) and most of the designs of climbing irons currently on the market were developed already in 1940-1960’s so they do not match with the modern user and safety requirements. Linemen are exposed to several risks, while climbing the utility poles and other high pole-like structures: 1) Electric shock, 2) A backward fall, leaving victim hanging upside down. In a case of a positioning system (rope) failing or a human error leading typically to ankle injuries and falling 3) A fall to the ground, caused by an electric shock, backward fall or failing equipment 4) Poor working posture and lack of ergonomics.

Altiax Oy has developed a new type of climbing system solution, the Genettaâ„¢, to improve safety at work of linemen working on overhead electricity line construction and maintenance. Genetta has been granted an EU wide patent and a worldwide patent is pending. The solution developed further in this innovation project replaces the current climbing irons that are typically simple iron sickles or spurs attached to normal shoes or boots, and give no protection to the climber. The Genetta solution introduces several features missing from the current, old-fashioned climbing systems: It allows a normal ergonomic upright standing position, protects from electric shocks, keeps ankles safe in case of a backward fall and helps to prevent injuries, and assures a firm grip and self-rescue. It can be fitted personally and used for climbing on multiple surface materials and poles of different diameters. The solution can be developed easily in the future for new user segments, like for sports use in tree adventure parks.
The first version of the Genetta climbing solution was launched onto the Finnish market in February 2018.

Economic benefits: A single lineman may need several different pairs of climbing irons for climbing different diameter and material poles. Single pair of Genetta has a higher price than ordinary pair of climbing irons, but there is no need for several pairs per user because of its adjustability and modularity. Also, competitive models must be replaced at least every 10 years, but by using Genetta longevity service, lifetime of a Genetta pair is unlimited. These features added with ergonomic and safety features are reasons, why Genetta means savings. Due to multi-functionality, Genetta can help maintenance companies to reduce the use of bucket trucks, thus leading also to savings.

The main goal of the implemented SME Instrument Phase 1 project was to create a roadmap for the first introduction of the Genetta solution to international markets. The specific objectives of the feasibility study were to 1) Conduct a market study in 5 countries to strengthen market knowledge and introduce the solution to potential customers; 2) Carry out CE marking tests; and 3) Update Altiax’s business plan including IPR strategy.

Work performed

During the 6-month project, Altiax conducted a market study in Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, UK, Norway and Portugal to strengthen market knowledge and introduce the solution to new markets and potential customers and distributors in these same countries. The study included customer demonstrations e.g. at their training facilities. As the second task, Altiax outlined the specifications for further product development and update of the product. Based on these tasks, the company’s business plan including IPR strategy, financial plan and operational roadmap were updated.

Dissemination activities: Genetta was introduced to wide audiences as co-exhibitor in Norway (REN Metodedager) and Portugal (Segurex) at trade fairs, and represented as a visitor at Health&Safety UK and at Elfack in Sweden. Being a visitor at Elfack lead to being a co-exhibitor in Norway couple of weeks later.

Final results

When the product is developed further based on the information gathered during the implemented project, Genetta aims at becoming the de-facto brand for pole and vertical pylon climbing, being the very first certified product globally in this product category and introducing Genetta method as new safe way to reach lower heights efficiently to totally new market segments.

Genetta improves substantially the safety of professional and hobby climbers, thereby contributing to decreased healthcare costs born in pole climbing accidents.
