Summary

Wearable devices have become a common accessory for those participating in sports and fitness activities, and have contributed to the increase in popularity of active pursuits. Such devices are able to estimate external parameters such as number of steps, calories consumed, distance travelled, and heart rate. However, the available devices are not able to measure true biometrics that can give personalised and quantifiable indications of performance, effect of dietary intake, response to exercise, effect of rest periods and data relevant to the prevention of injuries. Every human body is unique, breaks down food differently, and has varying metabolic needs, energy expenditure, response to exercise and other related stimuli. In order to solve the present inactivity crisis (both in Europe and worldwide) without a subsequent proliferation of sports injuries, it is crucial to provide tools that enable users to truly engage with their personal training plans and take control of their health and fitness. The overall objectives for Caura are to introduce Smart Tracker to the market. Smart Tracker is an innovative, platform technology capable of unlocking the body\'s molecular signature to provide a true picture of performance in real-time. The platform has been integrated into a revolutionary wearable device that can measure a range of health-related parameters and provide personalised recommendations for ongoing improvement.

Work performed

During Phase 1, Caura performed a thorough review of the necessary activities to bring the device to market, including hardware and software upgrades, establishment and scale-up of the value chain, and the validation activities required to achieve the CE Mark. Caura further discussed the participation of several well-known international sports clubs in the proposed activities, and entered discussions with a range of potential manufacturing partners. Caura performed detailed market research, assessed the business model and go-to-market strategy, and produced a financial plan for the next 5 years.

Final results

The expected outcome of the future innovation project is to fully optimize the device and cloud analytics platform, scale-up the manufacturing, and perform the necessary validation activities to bring the device to market at the end of Phase 2. The Smart Tracker will provide unprecedented access to real-time health data and personalised recommendations for improvement of training, diets, and optimising rest and recovery. This will deliver a significant economic impact for the company, result in the creation of a large number of highly paid jobs, and have a positive effect on the health & fitness of the European population.
