Summary

A novel space qualified reprogrammable general purpose platform, based on SRAM reprogrammable FPGA technology, is presented herein. Until recently, implementing high-speed Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms for space was only possible with anti-fusible technology devices. These devices are resistant to radiation but can be programmed only once. The emergence of reconfigurable FPGAs with space qualification opens up new opportunities in space missions.
SPACE-DSP is a project financed by Horizon 2020 dedicated program SME-SPACE-1-2014/2015 to explore the technical and commercial feasibility of the project.

Work performed

This feasibility study has led to the refinement of a more accurate definition of the market analysis in order to enhance the viability of the project according to last market tendencies. A detailed design of the platform, including hardware, firmware and software considerations, has also been defined within the reporting period. A detailed performance model has been developed in order to recognise what the platform functionality must aim for, including detailed specifications of the different sub-systems of the platform.

Final results

The main conclusion of the feasibility study is that the business idea shall continue, as being considered a product with a great potential to achieve breakthrough innovation in the market. AD TELECOM wants to exploit and commercialize a reprogrammable general purpose platform with two main targets. First of all, the platform makes space sector and missions more accessible and affordable to research centres and companies with limited access to space missions exploitation. Secondly, large companies will benefit from the flexibility of reconfigurable platform in order to optimise the resources of the satellite.
