Summary

The building sector is one of the most energivorous ones of our society as it accounts for the 40% of the EU energy consumption. However, one of the most challenging topics to address is the very high consumption recorded in old and not efficient buildings. In this way, it could be possible to lower not only costs associated to energy, but also to produce societal benefits for citizens. Based on the EU policies and objectives, it is pivotal to act towards innovative solutions to decrease the environmental impact residential buildings have and to make feasible the transformation of high-carbon buildings into environmental-friendly units. This, also because innovative approaches toward NZB renovation can be seen as one the main enablers to promote business research and innovation in the EU framework. REZBUILD bases its mission on the need to operate toward the rehabilitation of the residential building stock through the transformation of inefficient residential buildings into NZEB. The project will act to reduce the energy consumption of buildings selected and will develop innovative technologies prototypes to implement on the Demos.

Work performed

In M1-M18 in WP1 the leadership was transferred from VIAS to RIMOND to ensure a more integrated vision of the work. Requirements and guidelines were defined according to a versioning approach, and first version of D1.1 will be submitted in M19. Technology partners worked on the development of technological prototypes possibly implemented on the demos. CARTIF and VIAS are at work on a functional prototype of 3D printer over vertical surfaces and its 1st design is almost completed. ONYX developed new generation of products technically and aesthetically customized to the residential sector, while SG Placo carried out a series of tests in lab and in some real scenarios in Spain to select efficient insulation materials. Exploded View worked on a prototype consisting of different sized panels adaptable to the residential sector, however, due to its sudden bankruptcy, no further developments were made. UNOTT prepared the D2.5 and worked on some tests on a prototype of SAHP.The BEMS responsibility was transferred from ESTIA to Maetrics as the latter’s background could be integrated with an‘algorithm box’ designed by ESTIA. Rimond worked on the construction of a library of BIM components. In WP3 UNOTT submitted D3.1 to D3.5 and carried out several tests to quantify the energy demand & supply for demo site buildings n.1 and n.2. Data on the Demo n.3 will be integrated once available. Results obtained so far will aid the selection of best technologies for retrofitting and design and were used for economic and environmental analyses in D3.5 that will be then integrated. D3.6 on has been postponed to M20 to be aligned with D3.5 and D3.8, the latter to be submitted in M20 as well. ESTIA has also been developing the first version of the Ecosystem and will submit it to the EC in M20. Its aim is to facilitate data exchange, decision-making and coordination amongst stakeholders with an integrated approach along the supply chain. In addition, in M12 ESTIA submitted the D3.7 with data collected so far.
VIAS and technical partners carried out multiple visits since the beginning of the project and worked on the analysis of the regulations and definition and design of the basic project. In the Demo site n.2 interaction with the Community took place since the beginning of the project. OBOS dealt with community requests and helped RIMOND to start developing a BIM Revit model to interact with UNOTT energy simulation.
OBOS appointed RIMOND as designer for this demo site and thanks to this collaboration the Community of residents approved the REZBUILD project guidelines to refurbish the building of their neighbourhood. RIMOND has also worked on the development of the Retrofitting plan for this demo to submit in M20.
With regard to the Demo in Italy, after the official request by the EC Project Officer in the 1st Review Meeting in M7, a new building has been identified through technical meetings and site visits, in the same area of the first one. The dwelling is an apartment block of social housing typology and is a very good example to demonstrate both energy and environmental improvements and social engagement and benefits. OVERDI together with UNOTT and RIMOND carried out a technical site visit to collect the first data useful to start building the “As-Is” model and the preliminary design.
The pre monitoring plan (T5.1) was installed in the Demo in Madrid in M4, while a part of the monitoring system was installed in Oslo in M3-M4; the rest of the system will be installed in M20 after the official vote of the Community. The monitoring campaign in the new demo will start after the contract is signed between OV and the Municipality, possibly in M20. First version of D5.1 with data on Madrid and Oslo demo sites was submitted in M18.
In WP6, OVERDI decided to postpone D6.1 to M20 due to both the delay in WP1 D1.1 and the change in the Demo in Italy. SINTEF carried out a big work in task 7.1 since M2 with a structured literature review, while in t

Final results

The REZBUILD project finds its main objective in the need to provide a collaborative refurbishment ecosystem easy to be customized and implemented according to the diverse building renovation rates in EU. The platform should be accessible and give support in the selection of best retrofitting technology packages in a fully integrated way in the value chain. The scope of the project is to meet 3 main KPIs:
Reduction of at least 60% in energy consumption to reach the target of NZE
Decrease the installation time by at least 30% compared to typical renovation process
A rapid PBP between 12-15 years of the best retrofitting technology package installed in the buildings
REZBUILD needs to implement procedures in the retrofit process as to embrace innovative methodologies, products etc. for the improvement of the decision making according to an integrated and multi-collaborative approach. The project will use a systemic approach to retrofitting to make it smarter, faster and more sustainable. Once transformed buildings had the chance to increase their value and efficiency level, innovative business models should support their replicability in the market. REZBUILD is willing to demonstrate and implement a large market uptake capacity, together with the chance to create a new generation of skilled workers and SME contractors. In addition, the transformation of the 3 demo sites will be pivotal to allow producing and obtaining some environmental, economic and social impacts, as the support to the decarbonization, the use of RES, the renovation of existing buildings in EU through a cost-effective and holistic approach and the increase in competitiveness and sustainability of the construction sector at EU level.
