Summary

The aim of FREME is to build a framework for multilingual and semantic enrichment of digital content. The framework provides a set of set of application programming interfaces (APIs) and graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to access six e-Services in the realm of data and language processing. The FREME framework offers several benefits to the above e-services, e.g. a growing support of widely used digital content formats, or adaptability of processing to domains and user provided data sets. It is build triggered by four different business cases, which are real life examples for FREME to validate that multilingual and semantic technologies are ready for integration in an innovative way. FREME as a project contributes to innovation in business models and growth of businesses: FREME supports its technological development with four business plans that accompany the four business cases in their journey “from the lab to the market”. FREME also leads to the extension of job profiles and lays the basis for the acquisition of new skills in the realm of digital content management.

Work performed

The requirements gathering that had started in Y1 continued in Y2. Different to Y1, in Y2 the requirements gathering was not focusing on discussions between BC and technology FREME consortium partners, but on putting feedback from FREME validation into the updated version of the FREME framework.
The job profiles described in the annual report of Y1 are still valid, e.g.: editor, researcher, data curator or content enricher.

FREME was presented in various occasions also to get feedback from outside the project consortium.
A key feature of FREME is that it provides semantic and multilingual processing based on standards. This improves interoperability and eases re-use or re-combination of e-Services.
As part of the implementation of the specific FREME objective “Objective 2: Integration and transfer of technologies”, we made the following technologies available to the business case partners:
* FREME Named Entity Recognition (NER) as the basis for e-Entity;
* Tilde Terminology as the basis for e-Terminology;
* Tilde MT as the basis for e-Translation;
* iMinds CKEditor plugin for graphical access to e-Services.
Via Beta piloting and validation planning, we defined the deployment of the FREME framework and e-Services by the BC partners.
The framework has been developed including business modelling and planning. ISMB led the tasks which implements the specific objective “Objective 4: Innovation in business models and growth of businesses”. The final outcomes can be summarised as follows. The BC1 was handled by iMinds as a use case. Three use cases were detected that exhibit a high interest: (1) enrichment for educational content, (2) enrichment of book metadata, and (3) content validation. For BC2 and Vistatec, multilingual and semantic enrichment is most promising with the ability to use private data sets in its business line ‘Deep Content’. For BC3 and Agroknow, a brand-new business line ‘WeSupport’ was developed. For Agroknow, Y2 has witnessed new avenues for ‘WeSupport’ commercialisation as part of a diversification strategy, with great success. Agroknow has generated 8 prospective contracts for 2017. For BC4 and Wripl, ‘Cognitive Content\' Solutions have been developed. This covers the entire Web content management lifecycle and includes now also smart content creation. In Y2, Wripl achieved 9 trial partnerships for ‘Cognitive Content Solutions’ with high-potential prospects.
In order to engage with groups outside the project consortium, in Y2, the activities focused on dissemination related to business opportunities. This led to 206 prospects engaged in bilateral vis-à-vis or virtual meetings and/or business pitches. We were also successful in attracting certain professional communities, including the big data area, standardisation, language technology, cultural heritage and selected industry sectors. FREME also disseminated scientific results of year two to the scientific and various industry related communities.
With regards IPR, exploitation and sustainability, the consortium has decided on the following strategy. 1) Make the framework components available under Apache 2.0 license 2) Clarify licensing and further IPR arrangements in D6.4, which contains detailed FREME IPR guidelines elaborated by IPR attorneys contracted by ISMB. 3) Make the FREME live versions available via the ADAPT centre for two more years after the end of the project 4) Enable all BC partners to install the framework as their own instances and enabling them to continue using FREME with their customers. In addition, consortium partners will look for further funding opportunities in the realm of EC projects or procurement.

Final results

After the Y2 and the conclusion of the project, FREME has achieved high impact in all expected areas.
1) Innovation and technology transfer in multilingual data harvesting and analytics solutions and services: The FREME framework has been established as a beta version. The six e-Services have been finalised in close interaction with the business case partners. Technologies from the realm of language and data have been successfully transferred into the business case partners’ applications.
2) Creation of data products and services that the action participants will bring to market in a sustainable fashion: all business case partners and technology partners have cooperated closely during the development of FREME beta. The validation of FREME beta has been undertaken with an agile approach, with the technology partners in the project taking business case partners feedback constantly into account.
3) Collection of data in one domain, usage in a different one: the usage of FREME across services has demonstrated the feasibility of data re-use across domains. An example is the application of the Agrovoc thesaurus. This resource has been developed in the agricultural domain. In FREME it is being used via e-Terminology for multilingual and cross lingual enrichment.
4) Adhere to business needs in terms of data quality management, cost of data curation and technical needs on all levels (from character encoding to multilingual thesauri + ontologies): The FREME consequently has been developed with deployment of standardised technologies, as already laid out in the DoA.
At the end of year 2, we got feedback from more than 200 beta users about FREME. All users were part of the “acquisition” phase of the innovation accounting. Via further phases (activation and retention), we were able move towards at least 8 prospect contracts that involve FREME empowered technologies. This shows the commercial success of the project outcomes, at its and in the years to come.
