Summary

SYMBIOPTIMA promotes the mutual interaction of diverse industries in different sectors, for beneficial reuse of flows (water, waste, by-products, energy, recycled materials, etc.), resulting in a more resource-efficient production at network level, and in fewer adverse environmental impacts.
SYMBIOPTIMA main objectives are the following:
1. Cross-sectorial energy and resource management of intra-cluster and inter-cluster streams
To open collaboration between companies of a Cluster by eliminating existing barriers in the sharing, access, analysis and elaboration of all the information relevant.
2. Development of a holistic model for the definition, life-cycle assessment and business management of a human-mimetic symbiotic cluster
A new functional model to be implemented in everyday production activities by the process industries Companies, through the definition of a new perspective of the economically, ecologically and socially oriented industrial symbiosis.
3. Multi-level synergetic optimization of energy and resources flows within the sectors and across value chains.
To optimize cluster composing Production Units, taking into account the distribution of decision making power within the cluster.
4. Extensive, multi-disciplinary, modular and “plug&play” monitoring and elaboration of all relevant information flows of the symbiotic cluster.
A complete “plug&play” solution, coherent with the distributed nature of the networks that characterize the cluster (electricity, thermal, water, etc.), to manage smart monitoring and elaboration of data.
5. Integration of all thermal energy sources, flows and sinks of the cluster into a systemic unified vision.
A more integrated vision of the network of thermal nodes of the cluster, following the path that is being followed by the smart electric grid.
6. Disruptive increase of cross-sectorial re-use for particularly impacting waste streams.
A novel technology for plastics waste-stream treatment as one of the most relevant and impacting within the addressed application sector to pave the way towards effective cross-sectorial industrial symbiosis.
As a response to these 6 objectives, the project has developed and successfully delivered 7 results:
* 2 integrated tools, for the demand response and energy aware scheduling of production units within a cluster, as well as of the LifeCycle and Social Assessment of industrial symbiosis practices.
* 1 ERMS - energy and resource management system as integrated platform for data and symbiosis management
* 1 Wireless and smart monitoring suite of devices
* 3 shopfloor technologies, respectively for smart thermal grid management, unit committment and a new technology for plastics depolimerization.

Work performed

An extensive validation campaign took place, involving 3 endusers and installing all the results at their premises.
Particularly:
R1 - Demand Response Mgmt module and 5 separate instances of Energy aware scheduling software were validated at end users premises, resulting in better energy purchasing on energy market and in lower consumption profiles.
R2 - Symbynet, as LCSA tool, was tested as a tool to evaluate a network of 7 symbiotic companies, exchanging flows and byproducts of diferent nature, as well as a tool to evaluate potential future scenarios.
R3 - ERMS was installed and validated integrating totally 3 production units, including complex 24/7 operating process plants
R4 - Smart wireless monitoring and control middleware was validated at single enduser premises, connecting it into all levels of the topology (gathering, gateway and processing units)
R5 - SIMS as smart thermal grid manager was validated in industrial premises, monitoring extensively different thermal generating, piping and consuming elements.
R6 - On top of SIMS, the MPC software solved the complex problem of committing generating units, to make the thermal generation profile adequately compatible for production scheduling
R7 - A novel depolimerization reactor prototype was completed and tested in reverting plastics to its basic pure components.
In terms of exploitation and dissemination:
R1 was disseminated in ICE Conference 2017, an article in the Applied Science journal, a participation in MECSPE 2019
R2 was disseminated in ICE Conference 2017, two articles in conference proceedings and 2 thesis, Workshop on CE with industries @SUPSI, at Ecomondo 2018, in WG on standardization and LCE conference
R3 was disseminated in Siemens Advanced Technologies Hausmesse, two scientific conferences.
R4 was disseminated in 2 workshops on distributed automation, 4 industrial fairs
R5 and R6 were disseminated in workshop at IRC business briefing 2017, in Achema 2018, at ICIEA 2018 and European Control Conference 2018
R7 was disseminated in 2 workshops on industrial symbiosis, 10 conferences, at Ecomondo 2018 and in Joint activities with DEMETO project. Gr3n awarded the Overall Innovation Radar Prize for 2018 for R7.
As for exploitation 1 result is on the market, while 3 results are about to enter industrialization and commercialisation.

Final results

R1. The new platform conceived by SYMBIOPTIMA is able to: incorporate resource planning and scheduling(including energy), Supply Chain Management and business processes of the enterprise and of the entire cluster; develop and promote a holistic comprehension of the system; include methods to allow information to flow to where it is needed; enable advanced forecasting functionalities to be used for optimal management of the cluster.
R2. SYMBIOPTIMA assessment model measures the impact on sustainability of the decisions taken before their actual implementation on field and taking fully into account all aspects related to the full supply chain concept of the Symbiotic Cluster. The creation of a unique LCSA modelling and assessment tool enables the evaluation of cross-sectorial productive systems, identifying quantitatively the advantages related to the implementation of SYMBIOPTIMA symbiotic industrial clusters and parks in comparison with individual industrial companies or classical purely geographical clusters.
R3. SYMBIOPTIMA has lead to the conception of a suitable multilayer cooperative optimization architecture that could exploit effectively the integration of demand side management and distributed energy and resources consumption minimization within the industrial park.
R4. A Real-time Platform for the distribution of intelligent supervision control logics over wirelessly interconnected nodes with embedded computational power.
R5. The smart thermal energy grid proposes a systemic and more integrated, multi-disciplinary and cross-sectorial view of the energy flows that “feed” the symbiotic cluster, through an end-to-end, organically intelligent, fully integrated environment where the business processes, objectives, and needs of all stakeholders are supported.
R6. SYMBIOPTIMA proposes the first sustainable (economically, environmentally and socially) industrial application of chemical treatment for reuse of PET plastics waste streams, aimed at developing, at industrial level, a microwave technology that provides an indefinite life to PET, allowing to come back to its composing elements (EG and TPA) without degrading the materials.
