Report with an inventory of innovative technologies of other sectors

The research stations PSKW ZW, IFAPA and CC will together with TNO, WR and the Fraunhofer Institute evaluate the applicability of the scouted technologies for their use in the different regions and growing systems for fertigated crops. The tasks specifically focusses on technologies that could fill the gaps as identified in task 4.1 but does not exclude other technologies that could improve the current situation. Technologies that are currently developed for this sector but are still in research phase (low TRL) are also taken into account. The proceedings and results of this task will be gathered in a report.

Reference documents

As part of the exchange of information carried out in the framework of both the European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive and Article 13(1) of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED, 2010/75/EU) a number of Best Available Techniques Reference Document (BREFs) has been drawn up. These BREFs describe the state of the art of current and upcoming technologies and techniques and are an important instrument in the process of environmental permitting and setting national legislation. Above all the documents give a unique insight in best practices. Since the IPPC addresses mainly the larger industrial facilities in the process industry, no BREFs are available for the agricultural sectors. Analogue to these BREFs documents a Reference document for the use of water in the fertigated crops sector will be set up. [M13-24]

Meta-knowledge database

Water research and innovation faces several multidisciplinary challenges and involves a wide variety of stakeholders like policy sectors, decision makers, researchers, advisors and the end-users in this case the growers and grower’s organizations. By lack of adequate knowledge exchange, the expertise of this diverse group is not exploited optimally.
WP2 will make an inventory of all the knowledge and technologies available into a meta-knowledge database.

Report with identification of gaps

The mapping of technologies and bottlenecks which is carried out in WP3 will show which technologies are used, and which are available but may not be used at all crops or growth systems that would be applicable. Documents from relevant technology platforms such as the WssTP SRA, the SPIRE research and innovation roadmap, TP Organics SRA and EIP on Water and EIP Agri strategy documents are used for this. This task involves the analysis of the outputs from the technology mapping (Task 3.2) and bottleneck identification (task 3.3) to identify gaps in technology and legislation to reach desirable sustainable water use. A workshop will be organized to consult the Stakeholders to get input on where they see gaps (output workshop T3.5) . [M10-18]

Business model for 3 innovative water treatment technologies

The Reference document and the scouting of innovative technologies will deliver a wide range of technologies that increase water sustainability. This task focusses on how to get the growers to use these technologies. This is only possible when we show, from a business perspective, the benefits for both the growers, as they have to implement the technology, and the technology providers, as they have to bring the technology to this new market segment. This requires the development of business models, such as the Canvas Business Model.

Innovation showcase events

To organise national and local FERTINNOWA dissemination events. The NCP will check if the dissemination activities are carried out as planned (T6.1). Each WP member will organise at least 2 local showcase events at which exchanged technologies (WP5) or other innovative technologies mentioned in WP3 or WP4 will be showcased and the results of FERTINNOWA will be disseminated. To be held at ‘early adopter’ commercial sites to feature the individual best practice technologies and innovations
Selection of sites will be done to cover at least one type of water source used for fertigation, growth system (soil-bound and soilless) and one crop type. Crops will be selected based on their economic importance in the region. [M18-M36]

Science and Policy event

This task is aimed to disseminate the results to a wider community by an international conference opened to any participant from both industry and academia and will include talks and presentations from the FERTINNOWA partners, but also from invited speakers that have worked on related topics. During the conference there will be a showcase event in which innovative technologies will be showcased. Special focus will go to at least 8 technologies that were exchanged in WP5, that will be showcased on field. Researchers, consumer organisations, ngo’s, industry, policy makers, growers and grower organisations will be informed about this conference. In order to support the exchange of the information to the growers, the FERTINNOWA network provides budget to make at least 30 growers, divided over the different participating Member States take costless part to the conference. Papers and documents of the event will be spread and make available on the project website. The conference will take place in Almeria. IFAPA will coordinate the organisation in close collaboration with all WP leaders and UAL.

Project website

To set up the Web site for FERTINNOWA and to inform about the project latest news and results. The main objective of the website will be to provide general information about the project objectives, current activities, Project Partners and achievements, relevant news and publications. The website will be updated constantly throughout the lifetime of the project, and a link will be included as a reference point in all printed materials (articles, press releases, flyers, presentations, etc.) and partner’s websites. Project partners will contribute to this task by supporting the translation of specific sections, providing input to the site in the form of relevant news items and ensuring its widest possible visibility in their own regions/countries and networks. This will be coordinated by one delegate for each country. NIAB EMR will create and maintain the content of the website with the WP1 Leader as its editor-in-chief.
Further the website will contain:
1. a restricted page for the internal communication of the Consortium This page will contain all reports, e.g. the GA and EB. Only consortium members and members of the External Advisory Board will have access to this page. PSKW is responsible for maintaining this page
2. an interactive page for the stakeholder consultations, here stakeholders can complete the questionnaires. EUFRAS will be responsible for maintaining this page.
3. a meta-knowledge database: this page will contain all information gathered by the questionnaires in WP2 and will provide the consortium members of the essential information they need to work out their WPs. EUFRAS will be responsible for maintaining this database.
