Summary

Chronic pain is a key societal challenge affecting one out of five adults. It is in general poorly treated, so improved pain management will be crucial for reducing the load of pain on both a personal and a societal level.

The aim of this programme, FrontierRESearchCOmpetences@CNAP (FRESCO@CNAP), is to install eight PhD Fellows (Early Stage Researchers, ESRs) within Center for Neuroplasticity and Pain (CNAP), Department of Health Science and Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University, Denmark.

CNAP is a Centre of Excellence founded by the Danish National Research Foundation with the purpose of doing frontline research on novel tools for identifying and modulating key features of human pain mechanisms. The long-term perspective of the research is to form a basis for the next generation of pain management.

It is a main objective of CNAP to have the best possible framework for research training and we believe that promoting incoming mobility and bringing the best international talents to CNAP support this objective. Thus, FRESCO@CNAP is a key to reaching this aim as well as to improve the existing recruitment and training conditions to the best possible international standard.

Work performed

The PhD programme has been advertised through international channels, including relevant EU portals. Eight ESRs (three females, five males) have been recruited in accordance with the principles of a fair, transparent, merit-based, impartial, and supportive evaluation and selection procedure based on international peer review, as described in the Grant Agreement.

The ESRs have commenced their PhD studies within a range of different aspects of the main research area, neuroplasticity and pain.

Final results

The CNAP recruitment and evaluation process was expanded to include external international experts in both the assessment committee and the selection committee.

Exploiting the additional possibilities of secondments and collaboration, e.g. with the FRESCO@CNAP partners, will give the ESRs the opportunity to gain insight into new business or research perspectives, thus increasing their market value and career prospects.
