Summary

Nano Coatings S. L. (hereinafter “NanoCoatings”) is a cutting-edge start-up set up in October 2014 following a close collaboration between the founders and the Institute of Materials Science of Aragón(ICMA), Spain. The company is located in the European Centre of Enterprises and Innovation of Aragón, an incubator that facilitates synergies within the knowledge triangle by connecting universities with technological centres and companies.

The core business of NanoCoatings is the production of high quality synthetic diamond and diamond coatings that can be applied in the industrial sectors of construction and mining, electronics and jewellery among others. We are the only player in Europe using this technology (patented by NC). From 2017, NC is member of the Nanoiniative Bayern GmbH which is one of the promoting organizations of the Cluster Nanotechnology, founded in 2006 in order to better exploit the enormous potential of nanotechnology. Besides, NC is also member of the Southern European Cluster in Photonics and Optics.

NanoCoatings has developed the L-CVD technology (patent EP 16382414.7) to produce cost effective diamonds materials with outstanding quality. The technology was proved to produce up to 1.99 Ct/day on the pilot plant. The feasibility study of this project was presented to the SME Instrument Phase 1, evaluated with 13.38 points, getting the Excellence Seal but no funding. Later NC obtained funding from MINECO (Spain) and NEOTEK (CDTI) to perform the Feasibility Study that proved the commercial projection of the project expecting a payback period of 3.5 years.

The objective of NanoCoatings is to overcome the technical and commercial challenges of scaling up the L-CVD plant: (a) ensuring the production of synthetic diamond at low price (850€/Ct face to 3,200€/Ct in Europe) for industrial commercialization with high quality, homogeneity, purity standards and ensuring the 4 C´s when increasing the size of the pilot plant reactor from 725Ct/year (2017) to a integration of 4 reactor with a production capacity of 2,400Ct/year (2019); (b) automation of the process maintaining reference times for each type of product. The main NanoCoatings objective is to create the reliable and adaptive diamond product supply for our clients. The products fall under NACE 2009: C23.9.9 - Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products n. e. c. Its strategic objective is to reach the market with a large-scale production of 2,400 Carats (Ct) per year by 2019 sold at the unbeatable medium price of EUR 850 Euros/ Ct.). This experience and investigations are the pillars of the project 2017-2019 (TRL7 to TRL9) presented to SME Instrument Phase 2.

Work performed

The following is a detail of the work carried out as well as the technical objectives achieved in this first annuity. In the first year of the NANOCOATINGS project, work packages 1 and 2 are completed, obtaining as a result the complete design of the industrial production plant and the END of the assembly of the first scaled and automated reactor.
DURING THE LAST THREE MONTHS WE HAVE BEEN CPACES NOT ONLY TO ADJUST THE RECTOR TO ITS 80% OF THE OPERATION BUT IN BEGINNING TO PRODUCE DIAMONDS THAT HAVE BEEN CARVED

Commercial work performed:
As already explained above, the dissemination tasks during this year have been brief, as we decided to focus on the technical part, however we have attended workshops and scientific talks as well as the nanotech Tokyo fair in February this year.
He has also participated in the annual conference of the Nano carbon cluster giving a talk to publicize our technology and create synergies with companies of the photonics sciences of the cluster.
In spite of this, hard work has been done in the creation of an investment plan and it is actively being carried out all over Europe. In addition next month will be published an article of ours in the magazine gold & Time .
IT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NEGOTIATION WITH TWO DISTRIBUTORS IN ASIA AND ONE IN EUROPE, SWITZERLAND

Final results

The current development of the new scaled reactor has led to the current rupture of the state of the art in the world of sithetic diamonds , which was the technological ceiling. no one in the world is using this innovative technique of diamond production by inducing plasma by laser, this will mark a before and after in the production of synthetic diamond, becoming a product of greater use thanks to its price reduction and revolutionize the world of electronics
