Summary

Design thinking has become crucial for high added-value product development, especially in the field of creative industries (automotive, art, fashion, luxury, sports…).
More specifically, in the context of globalisation, consumers demand greater variety and customization in product offering such as higher aesthetics, functionalities, integrability, reconfigurability or sustainability. Advanced materials and manufacturing processes are key enabling technologies to answer these requirements.

The PRESTIGE project aims at bringing together design-thinking innovation strategies with advanced printed functional materials developments (electroactive fluorinated polymers, photoactive materials, electroactive organic moeities, fluorinated relaxor terpolymers, tailor-made polymers for overmoulding and organo-mineral coating) and
integration to demonstrate high-end interactive and aesthetics final products at TRL7 tackling tomorrow’s societal challenges.

Five demonstrators will be developed and disseminated. Three business cases : (i) a haptic steering wheel for enhanced driving-experience (answering safe mobility challenge), (ii) energy harvesting and storage capacities for wearables (answering health, well-being and fashion challenges), (iii) e-plastic labels and oleophobic coatings for a
more sustainable multi-use packaging (answering waste management: a major environmental challenge). Moreover, an artistic case (iv) to reach a wide audience of societal stakeholders and a design showcase (v) to increase awareness of designers about new materials.

In PRESTIGE a consortium of 16 partners all along the value chain from designers, material and process scientists, material suppliers, manufacturers, systems integrators, end-users to artists and societal stakeholders has been set-up to stand as a unique European reference in the future fostering design-driven innovation in creative industries and beyond, by promoting their achievements through an SME-oriented cluster of excellence.

Work performed

After18 months of development, the project achieved significant progresses toward the demonstration of the implementation of a collaborative user-centered and eco-innovative design methodology relying on the expertise of designers, materials scientists and suppliers, process developpers and end-users.

Definition and implementation of a design-thinking framework for the project has started. The main accomplishments of this implementation are listed below:
● Design thinking workshops completed and design briefs for Business Cases I – IV generated from the outputs
● Artistic workshop conducted for Business Case V conducted and design proposal developed by artists
● Design concepts and specifications generated and agreed for Business Cases I, II, IV and V based on design briefs
● Circular economy concepts and strategies developed for Business Cases I, II, IV and V based on design concepts and specifications
● Prototype features selected for Business Cases I and II; visual and physical prototype features developed and user experience studies planned for Business Cases I and II and implemented for Business Case II.

Relevant dissemination and exploitation strategy have been implemented.
● PRESTIGE project has been presented at the Organic and Printed Electronics Association (OEA) exhibition
● Website has been launched in November 2018
● A twitter account and a LinkedIn page has been created
● A list of companies/events to follow has been drafted in order to boost the PRESTIGE project visibility
● A flyer has been created and shared with partners
● A one day exploitation workshop was held
● The key exploitable results (KER’s) for each partner have been identified

Final results

The work on conductive materials, piezoelectric inks, photo-active materials, conductive inks, injection molding trials, transparency of hydrophobic coatings started on M9 and main results are:
● Synthesis of new electroactive polymers and development of new formulations. Characterization of the polymers morphology and electro-mechanical properties versus composition
● Up-scaling of the conjugated polymer WF3 by Advent to supply VTT for the fabrication of the organic photovoltaic modules. WF3 in 1g scale up to now. Scale-up in gram quantities of the functional precursor monomers.
● First test of full organic battery in anionic configuration using polynitroxyde and polyviologene based electrodes
● Silver nanoparticles were successfully dispersed in water in order to start ink formulation
● Selection of polymers of interest for injection. First injection trials successful

Several processes associated with materials have been improved to develop new components :
● printed actuators for haptic components
● printed decorative OPV
● printed conductive lines
● printed organic batteries
● printed organic supercapacitors
● sol gel for conductive
● overmolding and thermoforming processes
● electronic components especially for ultra-low power chip-platform for sensing, sensors processing and contactless wireless communications

Validation of new materials and manufacturing processes associated with the innovative design strategy have started for different business cases, design and artistic cases:
● Bc(i): Design and manufacturing of a new layout for actuators prototype
● Bc(i): Vibration benchmark testing of first generation printed actuators
● Bc(i): Started developing prototype haptic steering wheel for user tests
● Bc(ii): Benchmark of season 24-hour sunlight availability on different latitudes to assess benefit of OPV wristband
● Bc(ii): power logger wristband, for assessment of real-world solar-power to be expected
● Bc(iii): Redefinition of Business case 3, needed due to large delays while starting up
● (iv): Five day ‘artistic workshop’ performed where designers and engineers collaborated on developing a new concept to be worked on in CEA-AAS residency
● (v): Design showcase concept selected and work started
● (vi): preliminary LCA assessment deliverable submitted on time
