Summary

The company FlexBio has developed a standardized, modular and high capacity WWTP that can be adapted to nearly any requirement. The compact and modular anaerobic WWT in standard container is unique in the world. It is therefore energy independent as it generates sufficient energy from the wastewater to run the process. The combination of anaerobic technology and aerobic membrane bioreactors is innovative and unique. The water can be reused after the treatment. The newly identified market segment of the tourism industry has a great market potential for the company in the EU and worldwide. Over 80 per cent of the world’s wastewater (and over 95 per cent in some less developed countries) is discharge into the environment without treatment. The global market for wastewater treatment in the tourist industry (without WWTP) is estimated at around 9,360 bil. €. The EU market is estimated at about 1,400 bil. €. A market potential in the tourism industry, which FlexBio can provide, is taken up to 25 mil. € per year.

Work performed

The project framework analyzed existing markets and identified new markets. The tourism sector is particularly lucrative and enables dynamic growth. In order to be able to offer suitable WWTP in the tourism sector, a new line of compact WWTP has been developed.

Final results

The technology was adapted to market needs as part of the feasibility study and resulting market potential. The technology is financially attractive for touristic sector within the EU and worldwide. A broad marketing measure is planned for this. In the next two years, the market entry is focused to the Mediterranean. In the process, two pilot plants will be installed at selected hotel resorts in order to push the market. At the same time, a broad marketing company is launched in several potential countries. It is planned to build up a service and distribution in several countries of the Mediterranean. In the medium term, other global markets will be acquired. This will be done in a H2020 SME Phase 2 Project.
