Summary

HIPER is the European project SME Instrument Phase 2 of Monozukuri Spa, an emerging European Electronic Design Automation (EDA) company. The project delivers an innovative software solution for the Input/Output (I/O) planning and optimization of complex 2.5D nanoelectronic systems.
The advantages of HIPER “I/O Planning and Optimization” are related to the reduction of design lead time from weeks to hours, facilitating the widespread use of 2.5D – IC architectures and reducing the cost of production.
During the first half of the project, HIPER has achieved the main objectives of foreseen and related to technology development.

Nowadays, the microelectronics market foresees 5 growth vectors – Internet of Things, Automotive, AI/Machine Learning, China.
All these vectors will require high-speed processing and storing of the enormous amount of data. Currently, we face 2 major challenges:
1. The continuous transistor scaling is becoming technically and physically not feasible.
2. Memory data throughput needs innovation to match the increasing processors’ performance.

To achieve the required levels of speed and storing, they need more processors, more memories and integration onto a silicon interposer. As an outcome of this, the number of connections in different dimensions will scale-up to the range of hundreds of thousands in the next future, demanding for an improved level of automation.
To overcome all these issues, the industry is looking at 2.5D & 3D integration which represent the emerging alternative to transistor scaling. I/O resources planning and optimization is a critical step for any 2.5D & 3D microelectronic design implementation flow and for its efficient and timely implementation.

The HIPER Project, a new design platform to support and automate the optimization of tens of thousands of connections and to drive the designers with a quick iterative tool, has been implemented.
The main objectives of the HIPER - SME Instrument Phase 2 in the first twelve months have been reached successfully.
The first objective is related to the improvement of HIPER tool functionalities and its integration in the EDA vendor systems. The technical area of Monozukuri has worked on the adjustment of the tool in order to integrate that in a test case. This activity is still developing but the GUI has been produced, according to the deliverable 1.1 of month 12.

The second objective is related to the starting of HIPER commercialization: several potential investors and EDA stakeholders have been approached and they showed a real interest in the HIPER project.

The third objective is related to the improvement of the company. Indeed, Monozukuri team has grown from 4 to 8 personnel figures increasing both the technical and marketing area.
Thanks to the grant awarded H2020 - HIPER Phase 2, Monozukuri has been invited and joined several national and international events supporting the dissemination and communication activities and increasing the visibility of the company and European project.

Work performed

HIPER Project started on 1st of August 2018. During the first half of the project, HIPER has been developed according to the technical Work Packages “WP1 – Functionality of I/O Planning Software” and “WP2 – Customization of software for any EDA tool”.
The design platform has been enhanced and the algorithm – Cross Hierarchical Optimization – has been improved. The integration with the Synopsys physical implementation tools was made at the beginning of the project. This activity was followed by the validation of the integration with Synopsys Signoff tools, after the signature of the extension of the MLA.

According to “WP4 – Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication”, Monozukuri joined several national and international events promoted by European Commission, EDA stakeholders, NCPs and EEN in order to share HIPER project’s development.
The communication also has been increased: the social media channels have been implemented linked to the new website.
The activities related to the IP have been supported by “European Patent and Trademark attorneys” as well as a specialized Law firm for the extension of Italian patent to Europe and USA.

The “WP5- Project Management” has been implemented by the team that is grown, in the first half of the project, from 4 to 8 personnel figures dedicated to the technical and marketing area.

Final results

The expected results concern the full development of HIPER software technology in order to reach customers and close a commercial agreement with a few of them at the end of the project.
The impact will be huge for the emerging electronic markets: all the driver vectors as Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Autonomous Driving, Networking, and Big Data will benefit of the use of HIPER because the final products will improve performances, reduce cost and time to market.
