Takeafile (TaF) is an innovative project with the goal of providing a multi-platform tool to provide a novel service for sending files between two users in a fast way, avoiding the use of intermediate servers.
The overall objectives of the SME instrument was to analyse the technical and business feasibility of this novel service. We aimed to fully develop, commercialize and push to a global scale Takeafile, to become a referent platform for file sharing among professional markets.
The SME Instrument Phase 1 has supported us to validate and demonstrate in real-world conditions the feasibility of a platform like Takeafile and also to explore its economic viability.
To evaluate the innovation and reach of Takeafile, the SME-Instrument Phase 1 proposed a feasibility study to cover the main aspects of the project as a potential product in the market.
The main results achieved in the feasibility study have been:
1. Technical Study: We reviewed the latest advances in communication libraries and protocols. We evaluated the Interoperability, Operations and the Viability to adapt our service to work as desktop and mobile applications.
2. Market Feasibility: The EU market was validated to reach the professional communities market. The result was a high volume and growing market, but with the limitations previously described.
3. Define the product refinements: In order to adapt the user experience to the needs of the targeted customer segments we end up exploring the alternative of an open source solution, based on the feedback of the customers behaviour.
4. Assessment of Risk Factors: we studied the main barriers and detected the potential risk in our business model, which help us explore new alternative business models
5. IPR Study: a study was developed for Takeafile, obtaining as a result an efficient IP strategy to protect our solution in Europe an beyond
6. Financial analysis and business model: we assessed Takeafile’s short- and mid-term future situation and learn about alternative courses of action in different areas, including commercialisation and monetisation strategies.
After the feasibility assessment carried out, the result obtained is that Take a file is a very disruptive solution in comparison with the current state of the art and could have a very important impact in the European society.
However, the business model has been analyzed, and the conclusion of opening the platform to open source has been decided as the best course of action. Take a file as an open source solution is a complex issue and new business models must be analyzed and tested in the short and medium term.
