Summary

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death globally. This disease is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. To date, more than 210 millions people suffer COPD with crisis respiratory episodes (exacerbation), 1 to 3 times per year. The easiest way to prevent COPD exacerbations is by measuring the oxygen level in blood. Therefore, COPD patients and their families or caregivers need devices for continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation. I4case solve these problems being an innovative smart solution integrated by a small and easy-to-manage pulse oximeter, as well as a smart data processing platform. I4case is located on the user´s mobile, goes with the patients everywhere, and is connected to the physicians who will have a 24h follow-up of their patients. I4case will reduce the 70% of the COPD respiratory crisis, achieving COPD direct and indirect costs savings of 40%
To take this innovation to the market, from May 1st until August 31th, 2019, i4life carried out an extensive feasibility study for their innovative tool for the prevention and monitoring of cardio-respiratory diseases. The objective was to address the feasibility of technical activities to ensure i4case validation on different pilot trials and enforce commercialization and exploitation strategy of the project by means of a FTO Analysis, a detail business plan and a financial feasibility assessment.

Work performed

We developed a technical feasibility to analyse the technical requirements to optimize Ii4case. We defined a product plan to confirm technical scalability and designed the future clinical trials to carry out during the next 24 months. We also performed the roadmap to market strategy with the most relevant activities to be developed during the phase 2 project. We currently have 1 utility model under development and we have developed an IPR strategy covering IPR infringement, protection and exploitation of our product. We carried out a patent search analysis and we concluded that i4life has not infringed on any established IP.
We developed a business feasibility assessment involved contacting key customers, end-users, and potential partners. In-depth interviews were carried out with all of these parties. This built up a picture of the customer pains, and the market where i4life would enter.
Finally, we carried out a financial assessment in which we performed an in-depth cost/benefit analysis and we evaluated the total investment requirements to bring i4case to the market.
For all that reasons, we conclude that the i4case project is feasible and go therefore ahead with a Phase 2 preparation.

Final results

Phase1 Feasibility Study gave to our company the opportunity to expand the scope of our development, having a better understanding of client´s and competitor´s needs. Also, we have acquired a better idea of our technical requirements and our IPR management. Now we have a more strategic approach to our commercial and dissemination activities, as well as a better relationship with potential partners and international business support organisations that will increase the reputation and visibility of our company.
