 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The applicant, from Seoul National University proposes to develop novel tools and research strategies for exploring the physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), at the LHC at CERN, by taking part to the CMS multipurpose experiment from 2012 to 2014. This exciting period will witness a new major step in the LHC program and BSM exploration, with important Physics results from the 5 -10 fb-1 recorded data and the LHC reaching highest luminosity and preparing for doubling energy. This project takes all these facts into account and aims to develop a “toolkit” based on Physics studies, related software tools development and detector R&D aspects to optimize the extraction of New Physics in these worsened conditions. By observing that the tau is a key component and the top production a reference process in the study of the BSM signatures, this project will develop tools for improving the selection of New Physics signatures from the increasing huge backgrounds and pile up events The toolkit comprises i) new highly performing software tools, fully exploiting the tracking information ii) inserting them at high level trigger, iii) contributing then to the exploratory studies to include the tracking at the first level trigger, iv) and participating to launch the R&D on a new generation of Silicon trackers and associated readout electronics. Integrating the tracking in the trigger is the main experimental challenge at LHC in this decade; it will request novel developments on various aspects of the semiconductor technology. The CMS part will be done in association with the Pisa CMS group, based on long term collaboration with the researcher in charge at the Tevatron. The R&D on advanced Silicon technology will be performed in the host Institution. This special twofold framework will optimize the chances of success by combining high and complementary expertise with important benefits for Europe and Korea in the long range.'
