Summary

Context of the PILOTS project:
Sensor-laden intelligent devices invade our world and change the way to design systems: HW systems include analog, digital, MEMS, sensors, etc. and from now on, communications as well as software are key issues at the specification level.
Magillem offers the only front end design solution covering Specification to ESL to RTL with the same IEEE1685 xml design database. Magillem software platform is used to assemble the largest SoCs in the world: wireless, set top boxes, processors, etc. and has proven to be the most versatile and powerful connectivity and register management environment. Also easily addressed are ASICs or FPGAs with multiple configurations. Building on its current strength, Magillem‘s vision is to become the provider of choice for a complete mixed system definition modelling and integration platform, from specification to firmware generation. By using such a platform, European leading suppliers of MEMS, micro-controllers, connected systems, etc. would save time and cost, during design, verification and certification, and vastly improve their competitiveness.
To the best of our knowledge, no such solution is available today: as a long time provider of hardware integration platform, Magillem is aware of its potential competitors and believe to be in a unique position to introduce a very innovative solution for IoT enablement. This has been confirmed to us by Research Labs such as CEA, Fraunhofer, TIMA, and customers such as ST Microelectronics, Sagem, Schneider, Bosch, Thales, and Dassault Systèmes.
Objectives:
This project is planned to be conducted in two phases following the EU SME instrument. In Phase 1 of the project, we have concentrated our effort on the following activities:
- Getting a clear vision of the market needs and identify all actors of the ecosystem
- Defining the exploitation strategy of the commercial offer
- Defining the commercial solutions to be implemented in the phase 2
- Refining the objectives of the phase 2 in order to align them with the results of the market’s analysis
- Consolidating the existing strategic collaborations with partners: laboratories (CEA, Fraunhofer, UPMC, TIMA), SMEs (COSIDE, a Fraunhofer spin-off), and industrial customers (ST, Schneider, Thales, etc.). This partnerships are presented further in this document.
Magillem has a strong experience in prototyping trough cooperation with key customers. In the consumer market, many products and services have already crossed over into the IoT, including smart buildings monitoring devices. Virtual prototyping platforms have been built to allow running the software on them, for instance a room presence detection device, designed with STMicroelectronics, CEA and Imperas. In another example, Schneider Electric has showcased the flexibility offered by virtual prototyping.

Work performed

The work has been organized following the three following tasks:
Task 1.1 – Market analysis
In this task, we have defined the exact needs of the potential users and specified how they will be answered by our solution. We have conducted a market analysis with two partners: Yole (Europe and US) and Tokyo Nano Farm (Asia). We have synthesized the vision in the part 1 of the deliverable D1.1. We have presented this work to the partners of our ecosystem in order to get feedbacks.
Task 1.2 – Exploitation strategy definition
In this task, in collaboration with our partners, we have defined the exploitation strategy. The result is presented in the part 2 of the deliverable D1.1.
Task 1.3 – Implementation plan definition.
In this task, in collaboration with our partners, we have defined the working program for the second phase. The result is presented in the part 3 of the deliverable D1.1.
The detail of the activity is presented below:

Use the offered coaching services for SME instrument beneficiaries: The Business Coach provided through the SME Instrument has been a great support to check and challenge Magillem’s PILoTS2 project, to improve the analysis on the results obtained and to advice on potential developments or corrective actions. He has also made a link with the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) teams, potentially when Magillem will make prospective actions in some European markets.

Final results

PILOTS1 allowed to realize the feasibility study, in order to prepare the build of the Phase2 proposal.
The expected final result is thus to get funding for the implementation of the work plan during the Phase2.
