Summary

It is known that current quality of water resources of the planet is not as high as desired and major sources of water pollution are from human settlements and industrial/agricultural activities. Thus, GREENAQUA will be, at first, oriented to agro-food sector as key market segment, in order to extend afterwards its application to other sectors. The need to take care of this resource has become a global concern and a full monitoring of water quality along the whole hydrological cycle is required. Legislation is being adapted to this new situation and a higher demand of water analysis has appeared. Despite the market needs to have real-time water monitoring devices for biological and physical analysis, there are only few commercial solutions which can analyse both parameters. In general terms, currently, such parameters are determined by archaic systems and most of them require traditional techniques for laboratory cultivation and analysis. Likewise, several R&D sensors have been developed but their results are not very successful: the majority have not been validated in real scenarios and/or have limitations related to robustness, sensitivity, accuracy and reliability. In this context, GREENAQUA proposes an universal portable sensor for water analysis which will perform sampling analysis in situ applying a Standard Method (MPN), according to national legislations as well as a high competitiveness, low maintenance costs and low environmental impact.
The main objectives of the project are on the one hand, the final development of three GREENAQUA product versions bound to the necessity of achieving a proper marketing & commercial positioning of the product and assurance its accomplishment under applicable standards and IPR protection. On the other hand, economical and growth impact is a goal that is expected to achieve by the company thanks to GREENAQUA commercialization which will notably enlarge the company size in terms of turnover and staff.

Work performed

From the beginning of the project a full market study has been developed, allowing to know the competitor’s situation as well as the potential clients and their characteristics and a prevision on how the business will evolve considering the previously studied.
The preparation of the project has allowed CIS to prepare its business and commercialization strategies as well as to know the own characteristics of the company that may affect when taking GREENAQUA product to the market.

Final results

GREENAQUA will be a breakthrough in water monitoring programmes because water companies or utilities will not need to comply with legislation analysis requirements through conventional laboratory services mandatorily, as they can perform in situ sampling & analysis thanks to GREENAQUA sensor, which is less complicate and cheaper than analysis performed by laboratories. Furthermore, GREENAQUA could be the key tool for monitoring the waste water reuse for agriculture needs with the proper diligence at the lowest price. In fact, the European Union has the goal of achieving the reduction of water scarcity through this method (Building desalination plants are much more expensive) if we take into account that the majority of water resources are destined to agriculture needs.
Besides, the GREENAQUA commercialization will generate new jobs positions in the company both directly and indirectly thanks to the subcontracts for manufacturing the product through local companies. Another plus point is the fact that GREENAQUA innovation will help to improve European competitiveness in this field comparing to other regions in the world such as Asia or North America and to improve the current water monitoring market worldwide with brand new technology.
