Summary

BASCHIERY AND PELLAGRI (B&P) is a worldwide-recognized premium brand for production and distribution of cartridges and cartridge components (powders and plastic wads) for smooth bore guns, used for competition shootings and recreational purposes.
We have rethought all our manufacturing process to increase our production yield and improve at the same time: (1) the quality of our products; (2) their safety levels, and (3) their environment friendliness. Thus we came out with our innovative project HIT, a strategic action consisting of designing, adapting and developing all necessary components, processes and safety-driven production machinery to industrialize our current GS1.0 cartridges and our new GS2.0 cartridges featuring an improved combustion profile and additional recoil reduction.
In the very worst case, we expect to increase our sales by +15% (due to current unsatisfied demand), reduce costs by a +15% (thanks to bringing cartridge cases production in-house), hence recovering the full investment the third year of business.

Over the last 4 months, our team has been performing a feasibility study, in order to analyse the key areas of our project. On the technical side, we have carried on our designs, developments and tests of the HIT components and associated machinery. We have also detailed and prepared a preliminary plan for the activities to come.
On the commercial side, we have assessed our target markets and refined our international business strategy. We have also performed a Freedom-to-Operate analysis, which is required to check and validate the innovation of our process and technology. Lastly, we have prepared financial projections in order to evaluate the return on investment of the HIT project after 5 years of exploitation.

Work performed

During this study (20160801-20161130) we have assessed HIT’s technical and commercial viability.

On the technical side, we have designed, built, acquired, and installed most necessary equipment and machinery to build a full GS1.0 pilot production line and we have evaluated the necessary adaptations for the GS2.0 cartridges. We have been working, with our Phase 1 coach, on the reengineering and optimisation of our process.
We have also prepared a preliminary Execution Plan for the project, covering tasks such as planning, budget, risk analysis and organization.

On the commercial and financial side, we have refined our international business strategy and elaborate accurate financial projections for the first 5-years of business, confirming that even our worst-case scenario achieves the targeted goals. We have completed market introduction in the United States, with our commercial subsidiary fully operational as of 2016Q4. We also completed market introduction in Russia during 2016H2. We have redesigned our distribution and sales channel, solving former inefficiencies.
Finally, a Freedom-to-Operate analysis was performed, as it is required to check and validate the innovation of our technology. This analysis has confirmed the novelty of our technology and the absence of existing thread for its use and exploitation.

Final results

The main benefit coming from HIT will be strengthening our international position, as it eliminates our dependance on third parties to guarantee high quality, safety and production yield. This possibility of finally being able to satisfy currently unattended demand from our customers will boost our sales. And by doing so, we also achieve 15% cost savings.
Furthermore, our new line of GS2.0 cartridges, featuring the highest quality and safety, as well as the use of environment-friendly materials, will be the perfect products to star our penetration in most active international markets.
Finally, as we will improve our production levels, we expect to create 15 new positions at our facilities, and following the high rate of women in ammunition factories (women consistently outperform men in tasks where high level of attention is needed) ~60% of them will be women.
