Summary

FED4SAE overall objective is to boost and sustain the digitization of the European industry in strengthening the European competitiveness in the CPS & Embedded system market by lowering both the technical and business barriers for innovative companies: To bring innovative CPS technologies to business from any sector; To link companies to suppliers across value-chains and regions in order to create innovative CPS solutions; To link companies to investors across value-chains and regions in order to accelerate CPS solutions development and industrialization; To ensure the sustainability of pan-European DIH network.
To that end, FED4SAE has set a pan European network of 8 multidisciplinary DIHs which offer a unique marketplace of components, industrial platforms, technical expertise and innovation services. It operates in one stop-shop mode for the benefit of companies to drive disruptive AEs towards new product development by providing end-to-end services and all the necessary expertise and competencies, by easing access to leading edge industrial technology platforms and research institutes advanced technologies, by providing help with business and market analysis and guidance from concept through market release, including assistance with funding. It will link the companies to local innovation hubs across value-chains and across European smart specialisation region, building up FED4SAE community of CPS innovation stakeholders. It will connect the DIHs with the relevant stakeholders (business, innovation centres, and investors) of their local ecosystems, to pave the way towards long-term sustainability of the DIHs and network.
To feed the DIH cooperation model, FED4SAE will support and AEs considering their excellence, their impact on the ecosystem, their industrialization implementation possibility and prospects and their foreseen business model through three open calls. The AE targeted products are designed, constructed and built on the industrial platforms proposed in the frame of FED4SAE, the AE innovation challenge is supported by the advanced platforms which bring expertise & know-how, advanced technologies and testbed facilities, relevant conditions for innovation adoption and access to further investment is ensured by collaboration work with the innovation management partner on the business case
At least 30 funded AEs are expected for developing innovative CPS & Embedded systems products with cross-border collaborations with ten success stories with short path to the market.

Work performed

M1-M3 period, FED4SAE launch:
• Set-up of FED4SAE management process: Regular Management meeting & financial reporting; Deliverable template and legal standard contract template
• Communication materials: Website; Industrial and advanced platform descriptions; Flyers, posters, emailing, webinar, etc.; PRs, promotion articles
• Open call process set-up with call materials (Proposal templates, guide for applicants, webinar, FAQ), Website submission page; Evaluation process (External experts Guide for external evaluators); AE Monitoring strategy & procedure.
M3-M18 period, the open calls:
• Launch of the 3 open calls
• Selection process (Evaluation meeting, EC approval, open call notification) & open call improvement process
• Launch of granted proposals (signed standard contract, CF procedure, monitoring process)
By the end of year 1, the consortium started to work on the exploitation phase, DIH ecosystem sketch and the sustainability issue. A first workshop was set-up in 02/2019.
In parallel, FED4SAE has been very active in
• Initiating the communication and SAE collaboration (Participation to communication events, and to SAE cluster workshops).
• SAE/Smart4Europe f2f workshop in March 2019 to exchange lessons learnt and feedbacks and worked on guidelines about FSTP.
Partners have established internal and external networks and SME communities to connect, engage and raise awareness of the programme and exciting opportunities enabled by the open calls.
The results achieved so far are promising with regards to what was initially targeted:
• More than 3000 SMEs aware of FED4SAE initiative through brokerage events, booths, FED4SAE information workshops, webinars and website communication.
• 168 companies registered on FED4SAE portals, 122 proposals uploaded and 116 proposals fully submitted for the three open calls, coming from 34 countries and 38% out of FED4SAE core countries.
• 32 proposals selected through the calls, 97% of them being cross-border.
• The first 16 selected AEs are running (signed standard contract, CF pre-financing, KO meetings and first MS with associated CF payment).
• The 3rd call evaluation process ended up by April 25th (public notifications), launch of the standard contract phase.
