Summary

The GNSS.asia initiative has been supporting EU industry and driving EGNSS adoption in Asia since 2012. Being home to half of the world’s population and to major global GNSS-electronics manufacturers alike, Asia holds importance both as a GNSS market and as a supplier.

The European GNSS industry is often stuck in niche markets within the EU, as SME’s LACK THE IN-HOUSE RESOURCES to systematically address international markets. Larger companies STRUGGLE with exporting to Asia when a POLITICAL or INSTITUTIONAL DIMENSIONS come into play.

The Space Strategy for Europe explicitly highlighted the need to STRENGTHEN THE INDUSTRY’S COMPETITIVENESS, to intensify international cooperation, and to upgrade its capability to conduct ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY.

After five years GNSS.ASIA has established itself as A KEY PLAYER IN ASIAN GNSS ECO-SYSTEMS, as a credible broker for Multi-GNSS opportunities and as a PROFESSIONAL NETWORK FOR GNSS in the multi-GNSS hotspot Asia. The UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION in GNSS is a proven outreach tool for EGNSS with measurable successes to date. Work performed

30 businesses were actively supported throughout the first year (from Europe, India, Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea and Australasia). The dialogues with these businesses either envisaged to facilitate market access to Asia for European GNSS entities, or to provide information in light of EGNSS adoption to Asian companies.

Key industry stakeholders were reached through a series of 25 industry events (self-organised, co-organised or attended), with in total over 1000 visitors in Y1. Key highlights include the EU Taiwan Smart Mobility Seminar (150 participants), EURAXESS Korea Launch Event (150 participants), ITS World Congress in Copenhagen (50 participants to the panel discussion only) or the Multi-GNSS Asia Conference in Melbourne (225 participants).

GNSS.asia maintained and updated its database of over 584 contacts with GNSS stakeholders from Europe, China, India, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and ASEAN-countries along the GNSS value chain. This database serves as a knowledge base, with details about these companies’ objectives in Asia as well as their key decision makers. In Y1, this database was made GDPR-compliant and was provided to the European GNSS Agency. A European CRM Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution was procured to further sophisticate this process in Y2.

Preparations were made to support EU industry delegation visits to Asia, including the EU-Japan GNSS Week in 2019 (focusing on companies with GNSS solutions in the field of drones and agriculture), a Korea-visit in 2019 (GSA and NavCert), ITS World Congress in Singapore in 2019 (with EU start-ups with mass-market solutions) and an already executed visit by an EU SME to GNSS.asia China in summer 2018.

An intensive and regular dialogue was established with over 26 GNSS institutions, in Europe, India, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. This served several objectives, including support to European GNSS institutions (European Commission, GSA) to establish or develop ties with counterparts in Asia; the use of Asian GNSS institutions as multipliers to promote EGNSS adoption and the identification of market opportunities in Asia for EU industry.

Concrete success stories include the facilitation of increased institutional relations between the European Commission and the Cabinet Office (Japan), and preparatory work which has led to deepened institutional contacts between the GSA and KARI (South Korea), GSA and GISTDA (Thailand) and GSA and ISRO (India). This will be continued in Y2, with support to the EU-Japan GNSS Summit in Tokyo, and extra efforts to drive institutional relations with South Korea and India. Additional contacts were established with research institutions in Europe and Asia.

Regular updates on market and policy developments in Asia were provided to the European Commission and the European GNSS Agency.

GNSS.asia has developed a portfolio of tools to drive EGNSS promotion in Asia, including a website, a newsletter, social media accounts, a new GNSS.asia flyer, a booth for conferences and exhibitions with a separate wall on Galileo differentiators, and a newly branded PPT template (branded with Galileo satellites). These materials include GNSS.asia and EGNSS success stories, and are adapted depending on the audience to include Galileo status updates or specific differentiators.

EGNSS promotion in Asia took place by the project’s presence in relevant (industry events). In Y1 only, GNSS.asia self-organised 3 webinars/workshops, had a booth or speaker at 11 events and was present at 10 events to promote Galileo, a total of 25 events.

GNSS.asia has maximised the use of its local contacts and institutions across to act as multipliers to foster Galileo adoption, whereas country teams in Asia were available for industry enquiries and questions concerning the use and features of Galileo. GSA outreach and initiatives, such as the Market / Technology Reports or calls for i

Final results

GNSS.asia aims to support at least 60 to 100 GNSS-related businesses in Europe and Asia in order to facilitate business partnerships, to raise EGNSS awareness and to enable market access to Asia. The project expects to see over 10 cases of EGNSS adoption, and endeavours to use a variety of local organisations as multipliers for EGNSS promotion (of which two to six in each project country). In addition, GNSS.asia will have organised one to two Galileo Hackathons in Asia to foster EGNSS awareness and adoption in the Asia-Pacific, while it will have enabled no less than three institutional relationships or even agreements between the EU and third countries in Asia.

In addition, GNSS.asia will ensure a permanent presence of Galileo on the Asian market, while providing continuously updated and relevant market information covering China, Taiwan, India, South Korea, Japan, Australia and ASEAN to the European Commission and the European GNSS Agency.

In terms of outreach, GNSS.asia targets to reach over 2500 visitors through events, exhibitions or presentations, and has the ambition to reach a 50% growth of 9,000 website visitors in Y1 to 13,500 visitors in Y2.
