Summary

B&M Thyssen GmbH is a German ICT-SME specialized in the development of onsite measurement software. We have developed and patented (to TRL6) a disruptive method to measure rooms and spaces simply, accurately, quickly and cost-effectively using a smartphone camera and its internal sensors.

Traditional onsite room measurement methods are complicated, time-consuming and error-prone. These methods are taught in vocational training and are based on the use of tape measures, and square and triangulation formulas. However, these traditional methods are too slow and not commercially competitive in today’s business environment, and there is also shortage of workers with onsite measurement qualifications, partly due to the trade not being attractive to young people. Even with availability of other onsite measurement solutions like 2D mobile apps, hybrid between mobile apps and laser, apps with flow plans, tachymeter, laser with handsets or tachymeter (stand devices), the customer still faces a limited choice of:

• Low-cost, fast, but low accuracy solutions (target group: consumers),
• Mid-price, slow, cumbersome, mid-accuracy solutions (target group: tradespeople),
• High-cost, high (millimetre) accuracy solutions (target group: surveyors).

With the help of the SME instrument, we now like to scale up our Minimal Viable Product to TRL9 and aim to bring it to the Market. During this Phase 1 project, the technical and economical feasibility has been assessed with positive results.

Work performed

This Phase 1 innovation business project was executed during a period of 6 months and achieved all the proposed objectives. We have identified all relevant aspects of the technical and commercial feasibility of our business innovation. The major challenge identified in our product-market fit was that the usability experience of different potential end-users must be improved, meaning that we will have to design new prototype(s) to find the best match with different use cases/ end users of the App. In parallel we will use the findings of this Ph1 and the respective feasibility study with business plan, to look for financial support. After this we will most likely proceed with the application for a SME-I Ph2.

Final results

Currently, no other smartphone solution can measure in 3D and also allows purchase of suitable building materials and furniture, etc, directly via the app! In all SoA smartphone-based surveying systems, the user must perform a continuous measurement, standing at a single point.

With roometric3D the impacts are:

For Professionals: simplifies offers and accounting for tradespeople; measures existing buildings for further planning and cost recording for planners; simplifies the obtainment of offers for building managers.
For Non-commercial users: can easily redesign non-commercial apartments, and fitting furniture and colour; can buy furniture and building materials directly via the app and can check rental spaces.
