Summary

The proposed project addresses the topic “Optimised cockpit windshield for large diameter business aircraft”. The
main objectives are i) to optimise the design of aircraft windshield and surrounding structure in terms of technical
performances (low weight, high capacity to bear loads, reduced noise) and operational performances (low recurring
costs, easy maintainability) and ii) to optimise heating power consumption for anti-icing.
Other objectives are:
- To develop models to support windshield design and to analyse power consumption for anti-icing and defogging;
- To propose five concepts based on different assembly techniques and transparencies;
- To support certification with heating power density lower than the currently used value of 70 W/dm2;
- To develop a front aircraft demonstrator and to validate the selected concept;
- To assess environmental impact of the proposed technologies;
- To set the ground for future exploitation of the project results.
The project starts with the definition of specifications and a review of latest emerging technologies to propose five
improved window concepts. Models and simulation capabilities will be developed and validated for the optimisation
of the mechanical stream on one hand and the heating power stream on the other hand.
A trade-off solutions between the five concepts will be proposed.
A full scale front aircraft demonstrator will be developed to assess the performances of the selected optimised solution
and its compliance with expected mechanical qualification targets.
Two partners will collaborate in the project: Company Saint-Gobain Sully, a long-time supplier of transparencies in
the aerospace market and University Savoie Mont-Blanc through two research laboratories specialised in modelling.

Work performed

\"This first period has permit to define and agree between Dassault Aviation and Saint-Gobain Sully the spécifications, the trade off matrix and the project organization (WP1). Moreover it has permit to make a State of the Art and review the latest emerging technologies in order to propose five improved window concepts (WP2). Actually this last point - proposing five improved window concepts - has not been completly finalized at this stage because of an estimated delay of 3 months on the WP2 respect to the initial planning. Besides, M2 milestone have been scheduled end of april with Dassault Aviation but then re-scheduled mid of May for Dassault availability. This milestone will permit to agree on the right entrance data for the next WP, I mean \"\"Simulation\"\" for mechanical optimisation. In the meantime we have started to exchange with Dassault Aviation models for simulations on windows concepts.
Additionally, models and simulation capabilities have been started for the optimisation of the mechanical stream on one hand and the heating power stream on the other hand.
And last but not least, we have identified dissemination, exploitation and communication Plan, and quite finished to agree on the Implamentation agreement between Saint Gobain Sully and Dassault Aviation\"

Final results

During this first period, we have not any result yet to permit a progress beyond the state of the art.
