Summary

\"By 2050, the EU-28 aims to achieve CO2 emissions cuts of 80-95% compared to 1990 levels and to achieve a 20% share for renewable energy sources in its overall energy consumption by 2020. This requires a process of \"\"decarbonising\"\" Europe\'s economy, including the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies. Wind energy and Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy have been the leading sources of low carbon electricity generation in EU since 2011.

The objectives of INNOWIND is to develop all necessary stages to introduce in the market a new mid-power wind turbine with lower installation cost per watt, operation under light winds, lower environmentla impact (negligible land, visula, nois and bird interverence), smaller safety area, enabling installation near urban area and reducing energy losses, and safer inward-collapse design in case of structural damage.

This new wind turbine will help boosting the renewable energies development in order to achieve goals in reneawble energy sources share, and will increase the efficiency of the electricity distribution grids by allowing a clean decentralized generation.\"

Work performed

During Phase 1 the task developed consisted on the deep study of the geographic markets where INNOWIND will be introduced. The market volume in the different countries has been determined, the affecting regulation in these countries have been studied and the key potential partners have been identified.
With these data a detailed plan to sequence the entry in the different markets has been set in place and the different business models have been evaluated in order to maximize the profitability of the project.
During this phase, the work plan for the next years has been studied, including the further development phase until the first sell (for its development it is foreseen to apply to Phase 2 of SME Instrument) and the first three years of commercialization of INNOWIND.
The project is being developed by Sistema Eólico Morcillo, a leading company on providing innovative renewable energies located in Murcia (Spain)

Final results

INNOWIND is a medium-powered wind turbine with an operating range between 50KW and 500KW, designed to be capable of integrating into the landscape being respectful with the environment and its biodiversity and ensuring security conditions to any human or animal activity that could be developed in its perimeter.
Its braced design, with an axis anchored at its ends to a closed trunk-pyramidal structure, provides maximum safety to the whole, favouring that any piece that could be detached from the wind turbine is confined within it. The structure also shelters and protects 50% of its mobile section and provides stability, reducing vibrations and minimizing noise until being inaudible at 20 metres.
Its low operating regime in the direction of the wind not only produces less noise pollution but also minimizes its impact on birds. In addition, its lower height (in relation to three-bladed wind turbines) reduces its visual impact and favours its integration into the environment.
One of the advantages of INNOWIND turbines is their modularity, and their adaptation to the wind area, being capable to adapt the size of the turbine to the wind of the location area. At a higher wind velocity, the size of the turbine decreases, and with lower wind velocity, the size increases.
It should be noticed that INNOWIND Wind Turbines have been designed to operate in protected natural spaces and, depending on the configuration, their applications range from supplying a small population or an SME, to backing up emergency and/or military units, among others.
