Summary

Consumers nowadays request more sustainable products also on their plates, governments implement stricter food quality standards and suppliers need to react. ProPeeler project is about an enhanced shrimp peeling machine with full control and optimisation of the process to enable full automation of the shrimp peeling industry. The objective of SMEInstrument phase 1 was to assess the feasibility of this project by analyzing data from pilot in shrimp factory to identify and plan further improvements, identify and plan other technical and pre-commercial activities, validate our IP strategy, complete an in-depth market analysis and complete an economic projection for successful commercialization and break-even analysis.

Work performed

Technically we have seen most interesting to include the visual control system and analysis and to optimize part of the current machine with respect to the cleaning inserts and the motor. This has been mainly result of the feedback from our current customers during this period.
Commercially we have analyzed the great potential in terms of market size of the warm-water shrimp market and the low automation rate this market has, which let’s us aspire on a serviceable obtainable market of 0.6 million tons annually in the first years of commercialization or translated into 391 ProPeelers sold. We carried out a patent search and find that we have full freedom to operate.

Final results

With the continuation of this project and the development of the new ProPeeler we expect to combine automation, quality control and real-time monitoring to increase high quality yields and reduce the environmental footprint. The average processing facility can expect to reduce its electricity use by 70% and its water use by 20% while increasing its yields from 40 to 41%. With the integration of the vision control system to monitor all the key activities of shrimp peeling in real-time, parameters to increase peeling efficiency can be adjusted quickly.
