Summary

This project uses the motto ‘science in the city’ (SCICITY) as a point of departure to achieve two overall objectives: (i) raise citizens’ awareness, particularly young people, towards innovation and research being conducted in Europe to face the impact of global changes and preserve natural and cultural heritage; and (ii) bring researchers closer to urban communities, enabling them to express their concerns and expectations about research and, more generally, about science.The SCICITY project includes the sub-theme ‘Cultural Heritage Preservation’ related to the promotion of adaptation measures to face global changes in urban communities, relying on the social, economic and environmental dimensions for sustainability, while promoting the relevance of science and research to assure quality of life in the future. From May 2018 to February 2019 SCICITY involved large segments of the scientific community in public engagement and science communication/awareness activities during the ERN and build-up activities, targeting all age groups, with special focus on young people – who are considerably exposed and pressured to adapt to the consequences of global changes in the next decades – and encouraging them to actively contribute with solutions by choosing scientific careers.

Work performed

\"
Awareness campaign Work Package 1

Main targets of the awareness campaign, communication tools and messages to be conveyed are in line with the proposal (Annex I) and detailed in the full Technical Report (Part B)

Promotional material
All announcements and promotional material will refer the compulsory mention \"\"European Researchers\' Night\"\", complying with the editing guidelines presented in the full report.

The work concerning the awareness campaign began with the creation of a graphic identity that would reflect the goals and the concerns of the project. Please see images of promotion materials in the attached file for the technical report (Part B) and the logo in the image attached. All venues used the produced image on online and offline media to promote their own programme of activities.

Communication channels
Besides the promotional materials produced, a diversity of communication channels were used to reach the project main targets. To what concerns online communication, the project website and social media profiles (https://www.facebook.com/noitedosinvestigadorespt and https://www.instagram.com/neinvestigadores/) were vital.
For results and metrics concerning communication please consult full Technical Report (Part B)

Locations in Lisbon, Braga, Évora, Coimbra e Monsaraz and list build-up activities: please see full Technical Report (Part B)

MAIN EVENT

LISBON

o Series of activities (114, around 600 researchers involved) listed in the full Technical Report (Part B), aimed at understanding and getting involved in science projects related to solutions to overcome difficulties facing global changes(Science in the City), highlighting cultural heritage preservation;
A total of 94 people ended up attending the event as volunteers (79 female and 15 male) collaborating in four teams. A dinner was provided by ESHTE within the scientific and cultural motivation of the Mediterranean diet.

BRAGA

o Several experimental activities (27), demonstrations and workshops;

EVORA

UÉvora participated in the big event in Lisbon for the ERN 2018, in order to replicate activities in a smaller scale, in Évora, on the 1-4 of October as build-up activities. UÉVORA participation in the event in Lisbon allowed the creation of different partnerships in order to develop a network that started to work in October to organize and communicate the ERN in Évora for 2019.

The EU-corner was present in a frequented area in each of the cities involved offering the European flag, connections to all relevant EU websites (list to be provided by REA), a demonstration about at least one local research project EU-supported in the area considered, interactive activities and testimonials/activities conducted by researchers funded by the EU, in particular, MSCA.

Besides this group of activities, the partners FCT-UNOVA (Lisbon) and ECUM (Braga) arranged some actions specially design for interaction with schools. The number of students that participated in these activities is 920. About 15 researchers collaborated with the organization of these activities, listed in the full Technical Report (Part B).

Overall number of attendees to ERN2018: 6916 participants

Total number of researchers involved in the activities organised: 916 researchers

Final results

UÉvora participated and communicated the big event in Lisbon in the ERN 2018 and replicated activities in a smaller scale, in Évora, on the 1-4 of October, weekdays to include University students. The consortium is working together to develop joint communication for celebrating females in Science (8th of March 2019, Women Day, UÉVORA) and for a big event in Évora on the 11th April 2019 to showcase what may happen in the 27th September 2019. Also going beyond the initial proposal, the SCICITY project was disseminated in the ERN 2018 in Coimbra and Monsaraz, two additional venues, with the Botanic Garden and Museum of Science from the University of Coimbra joining as associated partners for the project, as well as Observatório Lago de Alqueva in Monsaraz.

Main results achieved under Impact Assessment:

The ERN2018 impact assessment results highlight:
o The ERN is getting into the Portuguese’s agenda and the interest of the public is raising in several cities;
o Visitors of all age groups, but especially young people; gender balanced audiences; mostly highly qualified people;
o The event is still able to attract newcomers;
o High levels of satisfaction and impact among the public, despite some variation in terms of academic background, gender, age groups, and nationality;
o Participating institutions and researchers also demonstrate high levels of satisfaction and commitment to the event (especially female researchers); the number of participating researchers has been growing over the years;
o Globally, the results this year are very similar to previous editions coordinated by the University of Lisbon/National Museum of Natural History and Science, or in which this institution participated;
o The response rates are high and growing.
