Summary

SmartRay, the market leader in cutting-edge 3D sensors, developed the worldwide first ultra-high-resolution dual-head 3D sensor system to be introduced in the manufacturing market. It delivers by 3D-vision complete data sets on manufactured workpieces with the required accuracy – in time (especially high speed), in size and fully assessable in space (thickness and shadow free). It can be used for inspection, guidance, enables automated handling, control, quality assurance and full documentation also of individual pieces. This 3D sensor will be inevitable for a successful implementation of Industry 4.0 and is fully in line with the European manufacturing 2030 vision. The current importance of 3D sensors is underpinned by a CAGR of up to 37% to $9 billion in 2016-2022. In 2023, we plan to realise a total turnover of 20 million €, with ECCO95 having a significant share of 39%, equalling 8 million €, and to create 44 new jobs.
The main objective of the SME phase 1 project includes to identify a roadmap on how to implement ECCO95 most effectively into the market by ranking market segments with respect to time and demands. Further criteria are low market barriers, market needs, willingness to pay. Pilot users will be selected to strongly prepare the market awareness followed by market penetration. The corresponding tasks include market assessment, customer involvement and technological viability and result in a feasibility report as core of a business plan. The tasks also address risks, mitigation and future opportunities. Electronics manufacturing, robot guidance for automotive assembly, or weld control seem to have priority without neglecting other segments. SmartRay is well-established in the 3D laser scanner market, laser regulations are adhered to and no legal/regulatory requirements prevent the market introduction of ECCO95. A broad patent base worldwide guarantees the freedom to operate.

Work performed

A main activity in addition to the update of the market study was the performance of a comprehensive customer survey with identified customers from Europe and Asia. This survey was used to validate the technical and commercial viability of the 3D sensor and find key strengths and weaknesses of the present solution. Including the implications of the customer survey, a detailed technological and commercial roadmap until 2024 has been developed. This includes the realisation of new unique products and the market expansion towards Asia and North America.

Final results

With the ECCO series, SmartRay introduced a competitive product into a highly promising and fast-growing market. By realising the roadmap until 2024, the ECCO series of SmartRay will clearly differentiate itself from the current competition and state-of-the-art with regards to performance, costs and applications.
