Summary

Fires in tunnels are extremely dangerous, they can be devastating with temperatures reaching up to 1,000°C and confining smoke in an enclosed environment. The most common fire prevention systems are passive, with the inside tunnel structure made of fire retarding materials. But there is a need for active fire protection systems to attack a blaze to prevent injuries and damage to assets. PNR is developing the Nozzle RRZ, an active fire protection system that is able to spray an area of 8 to 12 meters in diameter with droplets of varying sizes to efficiently attack a blaze. We achieve this with low water pressure, thus reducing infrastructure requirements and subsequently reducing operation and maintenance costs. During the Phase 1, we analyzed the technical, commercial and financial feasibility of our project for a successful commercialization.

Work performed

We have defined the technical developments and work that are required to bring our Nozzle RRZ to TRL9. We have also defined the Work Plan that will be implemented during the Phase 2 project, as well as identified the personnel resources, subcontracting work, the materials and equipment that will be needed. We have defined our technical, commercial and financial risk management plan with the corresponding mitigation measures. And we have conducted an analysis of the Fire Protection and Fire and Safety markets, performed an FTO assessment to confirm that we have no IP conflicts, and researched our competition.
During the Feasibility Study, we have also established the total required budget for the execution of our Phase 2 project, and also estimated our financial projections for the first 5-year post Phase 2 period.

Final results

PNR is developing an innovative spray nozzle as an active fire prevention system for implementation in highway, railway and road tunnels. Current fire prevention systems in tunnels are passive and do not actively combat fires. We are working to greatly improve fire safety measures with the Nozzle RRZ that will not only increase the firefighting capabilities of active fire prevention systems, but also reduce costs. Our solution will be able to replace sprinkler and mist spray systems while using less water at lower pressure, resulting in lower required investment and decreased operation and maintenance costs. We expect to have a market-ready solution by 2021, and obtain a cumulative revenue of over €13 million during the first 5 year of commercialization while we consolidate our position in Europe.
