 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The objective of the current proposal is to develop the research potential of Institute of Chemistry at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia. To achive the general objectives of the proposal, the following activities are foreseen: - stengthening partnerships and establishing new networks with the leading competence centres on the edge of bio-, materials and ICT sciences in Europe; - mobilizing human resources to reinforce competence base in interdisciplinary biochemical and material research; - drawing industry´s and other public attention and recognition to a researcher´s role and contribution to the society through an international conference; - upgrading of research infrastructure; - initation of pan-European joint research projects.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

Tallinn University of Technology (TUT), Estonia requires skilled personnel, infrastructure upgrades and global networking to improve research capacity in fields like biochemistry and biomedicine. An EU initiative helped facilitate EU-wide interdisciplinary collaboration across the fields of chemistry, biochemistry and materials science.

Descrizione progetto (Article)

Work on the EU-funded project http://www.chem.ttu.ee/ (IC-UP2) (Developing the research potential of Institute of Chemistry at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia) began with an assessment of the facilities at the University's Institute of Chemistry (IC) for required upgrades and deficiencies in research capacity. The need for better infrastructure, skilled scientists, and networking at national and international levels for initiating or participating in joint research was identified.

Three high-performance instruments were purchased to improve the research infrastructure at the IC. The upgrade enabled early-stage researchers (ESRs) and research specialists to carry out world-class research in the biochemistry and biomedical domains.

Two experienced and renowned scientists in their respective fields were recruited for the IC to contribute know-how. Three secondments of ESRs from other European research centres and four from the IC helped strengthen partnerships and deepen multilateral cooperation. There were also three secondments of research specialists that took place.

A high-level international scientific conference on materials and technologies for green chemistry was organised. The main aim was to provide an environment that facilitated widespread interdisciplinary communication. A series of seminars and workshops on analytical and organic chemistry were held to disseminate the latest information and research approaches in the field by the ESRs and research specialists. They also participated in international seminars, conferences and workshops to present research outcomes to a wider audience.

By strengthening the research capacity of the IC, IC-UP2 facilitated its establishment as a leading centre of excellence in chemistry, biochemistry and materials science.
