Summary

The platform to be developed within the AnyPLACE project is designed to allow the energy management of buildings, targeting mainly households, by managing and controlling existing loads, generation and storage resources according to their flexibility. It will allow the local energy management, with the purpose of optimizing the energy use, and allow the end-user to become an active participant in new energy services provision like demand response, offered by service providers like retailers or aggregators. The platform is oriented towards the management of the energy use by exploring the potential flexibility in the electricity consumption, and whenever possible, make use of local energy generation and storage. In order to achieve that, a variety of functionalities regarding control and management of in-building energy resources have to be defined along with an interoperable strategy between components, systems and actors.

The major outcomes of the project are best described by the produced deliverable and achieved milestones

In this reporting period, 5 important deliverables were produced by the AnyPLACE consortium and a milestone was achieved.

The deliverable D9.1 established the dissemination strategy for the whole project with different strategies and initiatives according to the project state.

The deliverable D1.1 has characterized the regulatory framework of the different consortium member states with the legislative support where the AnyPLACE platform is likely to be installed. The main physical environments (ex. households) were identified in which the AnyPLACE may be installed.

The deliverable D2.1 has approached the socioeconomic context in which the AnyPLACE solution is likely to be deployed. The electricity consumption habits as well as the energy costs were identified and surveys from smart grid projects were used to empirically characterize the attitudes, preferences and concerns of end-users. The best practices and end-user engagement strategies were presented along with the associated barriers.

The deliverable D3.1 has analysed the characteristics of existing devices, end-user interfaces and communications platforms related with the AnyPLACE project. Current business practices and services related with AnyPLACE were identified and characterized, with some existing examples in the market, to identify relevant characteristics and functionalities to consider for the AnyPLACE platform specification.

The deliverable D4.1 identified the high level functional requirements that the AnyPLACE platform needs to support in order to fulfil different energy management strategies. A set of potential deployment scenarios are established to help in defining the scope and context of application of the AnyPLACE platform and consider their impact on the functionalities that need to be considered when designing the platform. A comprehensive listing of requirements was established for each set of services.

The milestone 1 “Smart metering deployment environments fully characterized” was achieved with the delivery D1.1, D2.1 and D3.1.

In the current progress of deliverable D5.1, the technical and technological control and management requirements are being finalized. Using the high level requirements of WP4 as a starting point, the technical and technological requirements regarding energy management, maintenance and support and user interaction were identified as well as the requirements for information and communication technology although from the application point of view, letting the more technological questions to WP6.

In the current progress of deliverable D6.1, the technical and technological communication requirements of both versions of the AnyPLACE solution are being finalized. The identified requirements are being consolidated to derive a concept for the external and internal communication of the AnyPLACE solution that fits in the context of different European countries. A strong interaction with WP5 and WP7 is being followed to define a coherent specification of the communications interfaces capable of supporting the necessary information exchange with devices, systems and stakeholders.

In deliverable D7.1, the technical and technological cybersecurity and data privacy requirements were defined. Requirements identification for communications among devices and systems are being carried out for both the basic and advanced versions of the AnyPLACE platform considering the regulatory frameworks of EU countries. A list of security requirements was defined through the cross referencing of multiple frameworks of different countries. An interaction with WP5 and WP6 was promoted to transversely define the cybersecurity and data privacy issues and challenges within the AnyPLACE platform integration.

Final results

In the current state of the project there is still limited contribution towards the state-of-the-art as the project is now starting to implement the different modules of the AnyPLACE solution to develop a true energy management platform.
However, there are already achievements worthwhile mentioning which were accomplished by analysing the state-of-the-art and defining a strategy for the project development:
• Characterization of the context (regulatory, socio-economic and physical) that allow the development of the AnyPLACE for real case scenarios and able to be adapted to them.
• Integration strategies were defined to allow the interconnection of existing devices, appliances, systems, etc. to cost-effectively implement energy management strategies and ensure interoperability. The use of specific hardware for retrofitting purpose has been defined.
• Definition of a methodology to identify the requirements for the AnyPLACE solution functionalities. The definition of a basic and advanced version (set) and the ability to convert one version in another shows the scalable and modular characteristics of the solution.
• Definition of cybersecurity and data privacy guidelines and auditing procedures to ensure the trustworthiness of the AnyPLACE solution modules and a secure lifecycle development.
• Service oriented architecture was elected from a set of candidates using a SWOT analysis where the pros and cons were carefully analysed.
• Creation of a development framework based on the openHAB automation and Qt middleware to support the development of the different hardware and software modules of the AnyPLACE solution.
• Definition of user engagement techniques through social and technological approaches to maximize the participation of end-users.
