Summary

With almost a half of the world’s wind power capacity been added over 2013-2017 (319 GW from to 539 GW) and an expected growth of growth of 51% by 2021, wind energy is one of the main sources of renewable energy today. However, it exists a serious challenge for wind farm developers, which must find cost effective technologies to reduce wind farm costs along the whole life cycle, in order to satisfy the growing demand.

The YURAKAN project arises as a result of 20 years work, investigating, experimenting and developing a new revolutionary clean and green renewable energy technology. YURAKAN emerges as a patented technology (WO2015/185765) for the large-scale renewable energy generation form artificially and controlled generated cyclones, intended to disrupt the wind energy sector by reducing the wind turbines construction and deployment costs. To understand the current challenges, current turbine implies a total cost of 1.10-1.56 and 2.20-4.40 million €/MW for onshore and offshore systems, respectively.

Therefore, the objective of YURAKAN phase 2 will be to complete the large-scale prototyping, testing and industrialization stages required before we are able to offer our solution to leading companies of the wind energy sector at international level.

Work performed

We carried out an assessment of the feasibility of YURAKAN. A summary of the main achievements are detailed below:

TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY RESULTS
The technical feasibility assessment performed in Phase 1 has allowed us to perform an in-depth regulation standards and certifications analysis. It has also enable us to define the work methodology plan to be followed during the next 2 years (see section 2.1), while allowing to identify the most important key issues to consider in our technical development.

COMMERCIAL FEASIBILITY RESULTS
One of the most important progress achieved in the commercial feasibility analysis carried out during Phase 1 was the entrance of our innovative solution within the wind market, taking in consideration its full potential and exploring its market opportunity penetration. In addition, we have defined the most optimal plan for commercialization and we have of the main key suppliers and stakeholders.

FINANCIAL FEASIBILITY RESULTS
Once we have carefully analysed during the financial feasibility analysis, we conclude that YURAKAN will be profitability, even under any described scenario, containing a ROI of 629% in 4 years generating €6.29 of benefits for each euro invested.

Final results

CENTRALES ENERGÉTICAS CICLÓNICAS DESARROLLOS CANARIOS S.L. has developed YURAKAN, a wind tower based on the concept of a packed and controlled cyclone inside a hollow tower, allowing the construction of a turbine generator from reinforced concrete structure. The implementation of our patented technology covers the need to lower the costs high initial investment in turbine manufacturing, transportation and ground works. The implementation of YURAKAN suppose potential reduction of 46.5% taking into account the savings in the construction total costs of installing a wind farm and an average life-time 4 times higher versus the current wind turbines. As regards the yearly savings, YURAKAN allows to reduce the cost derived from the maintenance, operation and land use.
